I strive to get the best results as possible for my students and will always follow the exam board specification used by my students and this enables them to be as successful as possible.
I am currently a PhD candidate in Geography, at the University of Sheffield, researching into the role of partnerships in delivering environmental benefits in UK farming (submitted 1st November 2019, undergoing examination). Prior to this, I was a Masters student at the University of Sheffield, where I studied MSc Environmental Change and International Development, obtaining a merit. I completed my Undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, where I studied MA (Cantab) Geography, and obtained a 2.1.
I have experience of privately tutoring a variety of students from KS3 up to University Level and have prepared students for a number of different examinations, as well as having examiner experience at both GCSE and University level.
I have taught at both undergraduate level and masters level at the University of Sheffield, UK. As part of this role I have also undergone professional development and have achieved Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
I aim to provide a fresh approach to tutoring. This involves trying to bring the subject alive and always relating the subject matter to the real world, I believe that this makes content much easier to understand and more exciting.
For each session, I shall prepare a series of notes or exam practice questions, which I will supply to the student. I aim to relate all material covered to the exam, as ultimately exam technique will be key to success at these levels. Wherever possible, I will make sure the student understands the work covered through setting a series of tasks and then providing feedback , if required, as part of my session rate.
I aim to be easily available to be contacted by phone and e-mail if extra help or advice is ever needed. I am very flexible and will try to accommodate most student's needs.
I am a qualified Geography teacher and have been teaching since 2011 and head of department for two of those years. I have experience teaching various exam boards including CIE, AQA, Edexcel, Educas and SQA both in the UK and internationally.
Testimonial from an A level Geography student tutored on Spires.co, March 2019.
"I was extremely lucky to come across Brian. He is an incredible, all in one teacher. Every lesson is well prepared and extra resources are provided. He is up to date with all changes to syllabus and exam requirements. Brian is very friendly and patient, he always finds time to answer my questions even besides lessons time. He has lots of geographical knowledge and experience from all over the world. I am always looking forward to having a lesson with him, it is worth every penny"

I am a recent Geography graduate from Cambridge University, Gonville and Caius College. I tutored throughout my time studying at Cambridge and intend to continue doing so as I love spreading my passion for the subject and helping others to achieve the grades they deserve! I also helped out at a teaching assistant whilst I studied for my A-levels at my local high school. I have experience with all specifications and as I achieved 100% in my Geography exams at A-level and GCSE, I can offer sound advice in terms of both exam technique and content! I have also helped undergrads with coursework and dissertations, as well as EPQ projects for A-level. My previous students have obtained A*s, with one going on to study Geography at Oxford and another achieving 100% and going on to study Medicine.
I have extensive tutoring experience, combining my love for the humanities and social sciences with my passion to help other students succeed. My lessons are engaging and interactive, whilst highly tailored to the student's direct needs. Online tutoring provides a dynamic platform that enables me to develop a unique and productive relationship with my students, helping them to achieve their potential.
I pride myself in the quality of working relationship quickly developed with students of all ages. Whether reaching for examination confidence, mastery of subject content or skills, or progress with emotional, behavioural or cognitive needs, all tutees should expect teaching that is entirely personalised and constantly adaptive to their evolving learning, including:
- guidance for pupils toward understanding and pride in all supported subject disciplines, while troubleshooting all associated challenges, from frustrations with phonics to maths anxiety, from the art of the essay to that of examination-timing and from Alternative Vote in politics to ‘alternative conceptualisations’ in chemistry;
- mentoring or life-skill teaching: identifying and fostering scholastic and general skills beyond those specific to particular academic subjects yet required for flourishing within educationally related outcomes generally;
- support for atypical educational needs. Teaching in this area is important to me, and I am currently extending my training with additional part-time postgraduate studies. Inwardly, special-needs are never what I see; what I see are special opportunities: exciting opportunities. My teaching teaches for exciting futures, not needful ones.
My aim is for each of my students to discover the tools, skills and conviction to achieve all the outcomes of their and of their parents’ hopes. I want my students to discover what they can do and to inspire themselves by what they find.
First and foremost, I am a Geography teacher and tutor in the North West. In addition, I have intensively tutored several pupils in Cambridge, in a range of qualifications from GCSE English to A2 Geography. I`ve also provided free tutoring to disadvantaged students in the County Durham area, and have further teaching experience with local schools and a language college in Cambridge, and with overseeing degree dissertations and university applications.
I believe that no one method is suitable for every student, and that getting to know who I`m teaching and working out the best way to pass on relevant knowledge are very important aspects of my work.
I`m also very keen on exam technique- knowing the stuff is only half the struggle. Working out how the paper works and highlighting mark schemes is also a crucial element of revision, and historically students have thanked me for taking the time to teach them to think `like the examiner would`.
I look forward to any enquiries.
I have extensive experience tutoring, both online and face-to-face, covering a wide range of subjects including maths, geography, physics, Spanish and oxbridge entrance. In addition, I have excellent academic background, with 11A* grades at GCSE and 4A-Level grades (A*AAA), and a First Class degree from Oxford University. With my experience and knowledge combined, I am able to provide interesting and engaging lessons, which will enable you to reach your full potential in higher education.
