I have studied a BA in PPE, and also have an MA in Politics as well as an MSc in Economics. I have a knack for grinding down on complex problems until they look easy, and I love doing this with students and watching how things start to make sense to them. As regards language teaching: I am a German native speaker. What I think is even more important, though, is that I have learned several languages, both in school, but also since, in my free time (including French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian), so I am well aware of how students learn languages and which aspects may be less intuitive than others.
I have been teaching Economics, Statistics and Econometrics since I was in college. After leaving college, I became a full-time professional tutor. I have worked with students who were complete beginners, as well as those who were facing challenges in mastering advanced topics.
I completely understand the initial struggle in decoding the concepts and formulas. I am adept in breaking down these concepts so that students can understand them. I use simple examples so that students can make sense of these topics. I don't encourage memorization and simply recalling the formulas, instead, I focus on the 'why' and 'how'.
I understand that every student has a different way of understanding things. Some students understand the concepts when explained through analogies, others when shown mathematical foundation behind them. I modify my teaching methodology depending on what the student is comfortable with.

I worked as a TA at the University of California and worked at different universities in Turkey (Bilgi, 29 Mayis, Galatarasaray universities). Hence I have experience in teaching. I am very academically capable, having gained a First Class degree (placing third in the year) in Economics and Management from the University of Oxford, 3 A*s in Economics, Maths and English at A-Level, an A in AS Further Maths and 10 A*s at GCSE.
I use my professional economics experience to explain to students how businesses and governments apply economic concepts, drawing directly from my own dealings with clients. During my time as a professional economist, I worked with the NHS on developing its internal market structure; governments on creating their health and social care funding models and charities on calculating their social and economic impact.
Over the last academic year, I have taught over 50 clients studying at A-level, IB, GCSE and at university (BSc, MBA, MSc). I adapt my teaching strategies to meet the requirements for each syllabus.
I prepare intensely for each lesson based on the student's needs to ensure that we can make the most of the short time so lessons become fun and engaging. I set homework each week and mark it by the next lesson, adding in-depth, line-by-line supportive commentaries.
< My approach to teaching A Level and IB >
The key to academic success at A-level and IB is to build an economic framework of key principles and develop a knowledge base exceeding that of the textbook. Therefore I encourage my students to read widely on economic topics and decipher news stories using their own tool kits. This way, students gain the critical evaluation marks that are necessary for A*. I also provide detailed marking and essay feedback.
I tailor my approach to teaching A-level based on the individual needs of the student. I work with all abilities, adapting my teaching style accordingly. A typical lesson will focus on:
a) Content and concept discovery. During these lessons I explain the core economic concepts, provide examples and test student understanding.
b) Essay technique. Writing an excellent economics essay is important and during these lessons I coach the student on how to perfect essay planning and essay writing skills.
c) Application and evaluation. To gain an A/A* grade at A-level, students need to be aware of contemporary economic issues and how to draw meaning from news articles. Students also have to think critically when evaluating traditional theory. During these lessons, I will guide the student through some recent stories and discuss with them how to link the content to their essays.
< My approach to teaching university students >
The key to academic success at economics at university is to have a strong grasp of the mathematics and logic that underpin the microeconomic, macroeconomic and econometric theory. Most university level exams are essentially structured problem sets with students using algebra, calculus and graphical skills to develop solutions. With my university students I focus on developing these techniques and encourage their practical application.
A module study plan might look like (taking the example of Year 2 Macroeconomics):
Week 1 – Classical Model. We break down the model into its fundamental equations and diagrams and we work through a series of problem sets from the student’s course work or my own resources.
Week 2 – Solow Growth Model. We work through the model, starting with the output function and then add layer upon layer until we reach the most advanced form of the model (i.e. with technological progress). We then decipher what the Solow model predicts for a series of events and answer some questions form the problem set.
Week 3 – ISLM model. We set up the model by first deriving the IS curve and then the LM curve. We then explore what the model predicts for the effectiveness of fiscal and monetary policy.
Week 4 – Consumption theory. We work through the Keynesian consumption function and how successful it is at explaining the empirical data. We then move onto income smoothing model and the permanent income hypothesis.
