About Me
I see myself as a coach rather than a teacher. I like to help my students get a better understanding of a topic by using questioning and prompting to help them come to an understanding of a topic themselves. I firmly believe that the best way to learn a subject is to enjoy it and to be able to see the usefulness of the subject, to give the subject context and relevance in the life of the student. If I can do this with humour then even better!
I am adept at adapting my approach to suit the learning style and background of the student, building a strong, positive relationship with the student is vital in enabling them to trust me and my approach to learning. Students who enjoy a subject are more inclined to want to learn and see it as a fun activity rather than a chore. My love for science and chemistry in particular is evident when I teach and I think this is embraced by the students when they fell that they are progressing and beginning to comprehend difficult, abstract ideas.
Tutor Experience
I have been tutoring since beginning my PhD in 2008. Initially I was tutoring undergraduates at Cardiff University and then began tutoring A Level students in Cardiff and in Reading after completing my PhD and commencing research at the University of Reading. When my contract at the university ended I received a teaching scholarship from the Royal Society of Chemistry and began a SCITT based PGCE with the University of Sussex.
During my training year I was based at an "Outstanding" Catholic School in Chertsey as well as a term at a "Good" Secondary in Ewell. I have since been employed full time as a teacher of science at a boys school in Epsom for 1.5 years and am currently teaching GCSE and A level at outstanding private school in Kensington.
I have tutored from 3rd year undergrad Organic Chemistry down to A Level and KS3/4. I do have some experience of tutoring KS2 on both an informal, unpaid basis for my friend's children as well as to children of the Dubai Royal Family! Over the past year and a half I have over 300 hours of online tutoring experience.
Topic Expertise
Edexcel and AQA GCSE/A level Chemistry Examiner for 2 years. Teaching all Sciences at GCSE level and Chemistry at A Level for 5 years. Tutoring A Level Chemistry for 10 years.
At undergraduate level my area of expertise is Organic Chemistry. I can offer expert guidance on structure determination, NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, organic reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, conformational analysis, reterosynthetic analysis, organometallic chemistry etc.
