Modern Languages Admissions Test | MLAT FAQs

Why study MLAT?

The Modern Languages Admissions Test is an exam taken by those wishing to study languages at Oxford. It is a standardised test that measures your ability to understand and use English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. In the exam, you must demonstrate your skills in reading comprehension and grammar, which are important for success in modern language courses. This includes activities such as reading aloud after hearing something in another language, or recognizing words derived from other modern languages. You will also learn to expand your vocabulary by finding unusual words based on meanings derived from their roots or etymologies as you progress through the exam.

Successfully passing the MLAT exam can be your gateway to working in translation and interpreting, international relations, and politics. You can also work in teaching, at universities or language academies, journalism, corporate communications, and advertising. Foreign language skills are now highly valued in all areas of British society, which is becoming more diverse by the day.

What university degree is MLAT useful for?

A degree from Modern Languages offers a wide range of career opportunities and international connections. If you choose to major in French, you could work as an interpreter for companies looking to do business abroad or similarly in other consulates around the world after earning your bachelor's degree in French. A Portuguese major could work for Brazilian embassies or their educational programs that spread awareness of Brazilian culture in different parts of the country, and so on.

The Modern Languages tests are used by Oxford University for the following courses:

What careers can studying MLAT lead to?
In this day and age, when the world has practically shrunk to a global village, there is no skill more important than knowing multiple modern languages.

Here are some career options for those who undertake the MLAT:

This is all up to you. You have a huge choice. You can look through our member tutor profiles, check student reviews and bids, their qualifications and backgrounds, hourly rates, hours taught, other subject they teach - and even check out if they have many repeat students.

Then, communicate with your favourites to see if they are right for your needs and learning style. You can have a free video call by webcam, usually over zoom. Then you pick the person you’d like to help with your studies and schedule your first webcam lesson!

Is 'MLAT Teacher wanted' a suitable title for my advert?

Although this is maybe not the worst bad opening line, we strongly recommend that you give it some more thought. What do you need? What are you trying to achieve? Think about what level you are and what you need to improve on, whether you need help with GCSE level guidance, or help with a University admissions letter, put it in your advert.

For example, a great opening for many of our clients could be: ‘MLAT support required to help with Oxbridge Admissions Test’. The more details, the better the match!
