Student’s (and parent’s) Common Entrance FAQs

Why study Common Entrance?

In 1904, the Common Entrance examinations were introduced in Britain's independent schools to assess students' knowledge and skills through rigorous courses of study. The Common Entrance exam is a standardized test designed for individuals applying to secondary schools in England and Wales. It provides an accurate prediction of future academic success based on past performance, but is also used as a selection process to move from junior school (from age 11) or senior school (from age 13) into prestigious high schools. These exams are internationally recognized for their rigor by HMC (Headmasters' Conference), GSA (Girls Schools Association) and IAPS (Independent Association from Prep Schools).

It is important to note that the Common Entrance Examination is not compulsory like other public examinations such as GCSE. They only need to be taken in special circumstances. For example, if a pupil is applying to a secondary school for admission, the school may require the results of the Common Entrance Examination to assess the pupil's ability.

In most cases, students must take this standardized exam at their own junior or prep school.

What should you know about the common entrance level exams?

Each year, Year 6 (11+) or Year 8 (13+) students must prepare by taking important tests that will determine where they will go to high school the following fall. These common entrance exams consist of various questions specifically designed for a girls' school or a co-ed boys' school.

At age eleven, this test includes three sections: an essay on writing techniques, some difficult math problems that must be solved, and specific questions on biology and chemistry for students with little prior knowledge of these sciences. This test is specifically designed for children who attend a secondary school in a first-class boarding school at home (in England) or abroad, without any special preparation beforehand.

At the age of 13, most candidates come from independent preparatory schools. The compulsory subjects are English, mathematics and science. Candidates also have the option of choosing a language such as French or German in addition to these core subjects. Subjects such as Geography, History, Religious Studies and Spanish are also offered at this level, but other humanities subjects such as Latin can also be taken if students wish.

Here are the top ten schools in the U.K. that require the common entrance exam:
