Student’s (and parent’s) Japanese Tutoring FAQs

Why learn Japanese?

Japanese is the most spoken language in Asia and one of the three languages with the most native speakers in the world, or one of the oldest languages. Studying Japanese gives you access to a culture that is full of fascinating and unique art, architecture and history.

The rate of language acquisition has a strong correlation to a person's success in many fields. Employers reward those who have already acquired professional-level fluency with high salaries and advancement opportunities that allow for rapid growth in position and prestige. Japan is currently the world's third-largest economy and set to become the second largest by 2020. The demand for Japanese speakers in Japan and abroad is therefore skyrocketing. There are even "Japanese departments" at many Western universities with concentrations in Japanese literature and culture due to student interest, making it easier than ever before to study this rich language without having to travel long distances or learn another difficult foreign language like Korean or Chinese. There are many reasons to study Japanese! Besides the obvious career opportunities in Japan and need for translators, did you know 45 million people within Asian countries speak and understand at least some level of Japanese? But it isn't just about jobs. It's also a fantastic way to learn an Eastern language for cultural or business purposes.

Westerners are fascinated by Japanese culture. Many people want to read manga and watch anime in the original language, but for a long time Japanese was only spoken by fluent speakers; however, this has changed in recent years. If globalisation continues as it has, every employer will be looking for candidates who speak other common languages besides English to reduce the barriers of working around the world. So if you have studied Japanese, you will have an advantage over other applicants.

For which university degrees is Japanese useful?

Japanese is useful for students who want to pursue careers in international business, science, engineering, medicine, linguistics, and ancient history. The reason it's useful for these fields is that while Japanese is difficult for Westerners to learn because of its complicated grammar and structure, if you can speak it fluently, you can communicate with other Japanese who can not speak English as well. So if you want to read an entire historical document from early Japan or China without relying on translations of ancient texts by scholars, then learning Japanese would be of great benefit.

Japan is also famous for its modern and state of the art educational institutions. With Studying Japanese, you can easily get admission in one of these institutions. This way, you can get a university degree in any subject from physics to medicine to economics and more.

What careers can studying Japanese lead to?

Japanese could be useful to people in many professions, but it's most often used in the following fields.

How does Japanese help with studying ancient history?

Japanese can help you expand your knowledge of ancient history by translating ancient Japanese texts into English. Sitting down to translate a text is the best way to encourage reflection on the content and the search for deeper meaning. By broadening your understanding of these texts, you will deepen your knowledge in a wide range of topics including ancient religions, art history, linguistics, philosophy, and anthropology. Exploring different perspectives is essential to your intellectual growth. Being able to understand different points of view can also give you insight into some common misconceptions that are embedded in a language without you being aware of them until they are exposed. And this insight can help us better understand our past and make wiser choices for the future of our civilization.

How expert tutoring can help you

Teachers will take the time to assess your starting point then develop a personalised syllabus to work towards your objectives. Online classes will focus on your areas of weakness and on developing the confidence you need to achieve your goals. Lessons will also push students in areas that they are already comfortable in, encouraging constant improvement and developing positive learning habits.

Why Choose Spires’ Tutoring?

We only hire 4% of the teachers that apply to Spires and they are all professional and experienced school and university level educators. Spires deals with all of the matching, scheduling, payments, and administration, we take all of the hassles out of organising support and allow students to focus purely on learning.

No, it doesn’t! It’s all done online whenever and wherever you are. All you have to do is pick your ideal mentor and speak to them to arrange the best time for you to have video lessons. It doesn’t matter at all if they are miles and miles (or kilometre and kilometre) away from you!

Who will my tutor be?

This is all up to you. You have a huge choice. You can look through our member tutor profiles, check student reviews and bids, their qualifications and backgrounds, hourly rates, hours taught, other subject they teach - and even check out if they have many repeat students.

Then, communicate with your favourites to see if they are right for your needs and learning style. You can have a free video call by webcam, usually over zoom. Then you pick the person you’d like to help with your studies and schedule your first webcam lesson!

Think about what level you are and what you need to improve on, whether you need help with GCSE level guidance, or help with a University admissions letter, put it in your advert.

For example, a great opening for many of our clients could be: 'Support required to help with Oxbridge Admissions Test’. The more details, the better the match!
