Physics Admission Test | PAT Frequently Asked Questions

Why study PAT?

If you are one of many students who dream about attending Oxford, then the Physics Aptitude Test is your golden ticket. This 2-hour test begins with 30 minutes of math questions and is followed by 60 minutes of science. You must pass this challenging pat exam to get a admissions at Oxford given you've achieved all other admissions considerations.

Passing the PAT doesn’t give guaranteed entry into the selected program, but it should put a student in good standing with selection committees. This is because applicants must still demonstrate skills needed for successful completion of upper-level courses (passing scores on English and Mathematics do not guarantee this). The benefits of taking the test include informing future coursework and career paths. Hence, if an applicant passes successfully, they can even print a confirmation that they completed the test on mock university papers to improve their chances of entering such institutions.

If you score high on the PAT, your next step will be an interview. If you pass this interview, there's a good chance that you'll receive an invitation to Oxford for their prestigious programs. Once at Oxford, there are many opportunities for research or industrial work with companies like Google and Microsoft\IBM\Apple etc. The great news about these lies in the fact that academic success correlates strongly with job prospects, so if you score well in the PAT then it's more than likely that your future looks bright!

What degree is PAT useful for?

After completing the PAT you can now consider yourself eligible to apply to a variety of Oxford programs that cater to engineering and physics.

Materials Science

Materials Science is the study of how different materials are made, what they're composed of and their properties. Modern society heavily depends on advanced materials like lightweight composites for faster vehicles or optical fibres for telecommunications to name a few examples. Thus, getting a masters in material science from Oxford University is truly one of the finest decisions you can ever make.

During the fourth year of their Materials degree, students at Oxford join a research team and work on an eight-month full-time project where they may be based either in one of the strongest departments for materials or overseas.

Engineering Science

The Oxford University Department of Engineering Science is one of the best schools in the world, and they believe that future engineers will benefit from having a comprehensive understanding rather than specialized knowledge.

As a four-year course, the Engineering Science programme leads to students earning their Master of Engineering. The first two years are dedicated to topics that all engineering undergrads should study while in the third and fourth year there is space for specialization into one branch out of Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical Information or Mechanical branches.

The University of Oxford is home to one of the largest university physics departments in the UK. This department is exceptional and has a diverse range of research programs:

The challenging and mathematical courses at Oxford University focusing on fundamental concepts such as optics and relativity. There are two undergraduate course options, the MPhys or BA program. All applicants apply for the four-year MPhys option in their first instance. The fourth year of study brings students to a threshold of current research studies which can lead them down subject specialisms if they so desire.

What careers can studying PAT lead to?

Regardless of whether you see yourself working at CERN or MI5, you’ll be sure to meet a plethora of Oxford physics graduates at both. Oxford only admits the best, and you can be sure you’re one of them if you successfully clear the PAT.

Here are some career options for those who undertake the PAT:

How does PAT assist with Philosophy?

Oxford offers a very prestigious physics and philosophy masters that combines the arts and sciences, Physics and Philosophy will unpack some of the complexities of how things work in this world. It helps you tackle the big issues by combining complex subjects such as science and art into one single concept. This course delves into fundamental questions for humanity including why should we act a certain way or what does it mean to exist? Thus, studying both disciplines opens up opportunities for creative thinking and innovation, a wider range of possibilities can be explored by an individual who has not been confined to only one discipline.

Physics can also help in philosophy because it teaches you logical and critical thinking skills which will help you derive more sensible conclusions. Physics also gives a more mathematical perspective on some ideas which can be helpful when talking about philosophical mysteries such as the "hard problem of consciousness". Studying physics might not always directly relate to philosophy, but it does give an advanced understanding of concepts that might relate more closely to philosophical study than other fields.

Although this is maybe not the worst bad opening line, we strongly recommend that you give it some more thought. What do you need? What are you trying to achieve? Think about what level you are and what you need to improve on, whether you need help with GCSE level guidance, or help with a University admissions letter, put it in your advert.

For example, a great opening for many of our clients could be: ‘PAT support required to help with Oxbridge Admissions Test’. The more details, the better the match!
