I have been a private tutor since 2007. I hold a Masters in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies for which I was awarded a distinction and full funding as well as a BA Hons (First Class) in history and politics from the University of York. Given this, and my A-Level subjects, I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A-level exams, as well as to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

About me

I am passionate about all things to do with history and for several years I have undertaken a variety of volunteer projects, working within schools/ educational environments. This has included working at the University of York, Barley Hall (York), Westminster Palace and the Tower of London, conducting independent historical research projects and leading educational sessions.

Tutor Experience

I have been a tutor since 2007 and have tutored over 100 clients since then. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with clients, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects. Whilst tutoring I pay particular attention to the needs of each student and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This not only helps to improve a student's examination technique but also their academic development.

I have helped those I tutor to significantly improve their exam results and grades, often taking them from C and D level grades up to high As and Bs. One of my most recent tutee, who I tutored in GCSE Geography and History, achieved Grade 9 in both subjects and came top of his year at school for his GCSE grades.

Topic Expertise

For those in secondary school, I teach history, politics, geography, law and English up to A Level and have covered a range of assessments and exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA, OCR and WJEC. I am also able to provide homework and revision support, as well as exam and essay writing skills and techniques.

I also have extensive experience working with both undergraduates and postgraduates, helping them with essays and dissertations, individual module work and in preparation for assessments, covering a range of subject materials.

Testimonials

"Lizzie tutored my daughter for a full academic year and she thoroughly enjoyed her sessions. Lizzie was extremely patient and explained things clearly and coherently and was careful to ensure that she fully understood the different concepts. Lizzie was a lovely tutor who easily put my daughter at ease and I would recommend her to anyone. My daughter’s brilliant results are a testament to her hard work and dedication" - Parent, 2018 - 2019 A Level History tuition "I approached Lizzie for support on my Master’s thesis and her reviews were incredibly helpful. She not only flagged up grammatical errors, incomplete or incorrect citations, and incoherent sentence structures, but she gave suggestions on being more analytical of sources, handling conflicting sources and making my voice stand out among other sources. She was very thorough in her review and asked the hard questions, sometimes prompting me to return to the drawing board. I am very grateful for her support and I would have no hesitation or reservation recommending Lizzie to provide support for undergraduate and postgraduate students" - Politics Undergraduate student, 2019
