About Me

I started working as a freelance tutor in the Autumn 2018 after being an Academic for 18 years working at Cardiff University.

I made significant contribution to teaching and research in Environmental Water Management, including development and application of eco-hydraulics and water quality models for riverine and coastal waters and to catchment management including assessment of integrated surface and sub-surface flow systems, constructed wetlands and the impact of biofilms on flow through pipes. I worked successfully as part of a team in the Hydro-environmental Research Centre, considerably extending the group’s expertise in ecohydraulics aspects of river restoration, water quality modelling of estuarine and coastal waters and catchment to coast modelling of water quality constituents, using a combination of field, laboratory and computer modelling techniques.

I am originally from Stuttgart, Germany. I was born in Paris, lived a year in the States as an exchange student, did my degree in Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and moved to Penarth, just outside Cardiff, in 1999 where I now live with my husband and two young children.

I love teaching and mentoring and have found that tutoring combines what I am best at with being able to flexibly work around my family.

Tutor Experience

Research Associate/Research Fellow/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cardiff University since 1999

TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND RESEARCH SUPERVISION

I have had a varied teaching role at all levels. This has encompassed a wide range of activities from lectures to laboratories to practical sessions and personal and project supervision. I have made a substantial contribution to eleven modules, eight in the capacity of module leader.

I have also sought at all stages to utilise my industrial and research experience to enhance my teaching material by the use of case studies and creating collaborative, realistic student projects.

Research Supervision - I have supervised 18 full-time research students, eight to successful completion, ten current, and three postdoctoral researchers. I have also successfully supervised 15 MSc students and 67 undergraduate project students. I have chaired six PhD vivas, and examined one Doctoral thesis as external examiner at Cambridge University, ten Doctoral theses as an internal examiner and have recently had an invite for external examiner from Stuttgart University.

Topic Expertise

I have been lecturing in water quality control, water engineering, environmental engineering and geo- and hydro-environmental modelling both on undergraduate and MSc level.
