I was educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford - where I held a Major Academic Scholarship - and graduated in 2017 with a Double First Class Honours BA degree in Ancient and Modern History from the University of Oxford. I then pursued postgraduate research, graduating in 2018 with a Distinction in the Late Antique and Byzantine Studies MSt (also from Oxford). Since then I have been undertaking legal training as a Major Scholar of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and will commence pupillage in London in 2021.
My main extracurricular interest is debating, having won a number of national titles. I am also interested in current affairs, literature (primarily 19th and early 20th century English poetry) and sport (preferably played badly).
I have extensive experience in the education sector. As an undergraduate, I undertook tutoring work preparing students for Oxbridge entrance. Furthermore, I was employed by a local school as a debating coach, providing intensive one-on-one training as well as more general sessions. My students won one national competition, and reached the finals of several others. I also volunteered with an educational charity, working with local disadvantaged school children. In London I have undertaken tutoring work alongside my legal studies, preparing students for Oxbridge entrance, the 11+, Latin, Greek and History A Level, and Theology, History and English Literature GCSE.
I prepare carefully for lessons, and flatter myself that I am swift in the identification of any particular difficulties. I am enthusiastic, and like - whenever possible - to impart some of my enthusiasm for my subjects to my students. I am approachable, but firm when necessary.
My degrees and A Levels (4 A*s in English Literature, History, Latin and Classical Greek) stand me in good stead to tutor the Classical languages and History of all periods up to and including undergraduate level. Moreover, both my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations drew heavily upon Christian patristics and Jewish theology, and I feel confident in my ability to teach such thought to undergraduate standard. As a voracious reader, I also feel competent to tutor English to A Level standard.
As a postgraduate student, my college engaged me to provide a seminar on historiography to undergraduates. I have previous experience of teaching Latin (OCR), Greek (OCR) and History (OCR and AQA) at A Level, and of teaching English Literature, Theology and History at GCSE and IGCSE (all at OCR and AQA). I have assisted 10 students with their applications to Oxford and Cambridge, providing mock interviews in the fields of History, Classics, Theology, English Literature and even Law. 8 of these students were successful in their applications. I have furthermore tutored a child for the 11+ examination, having passed the test successfully myself, and am happy to coach candidates for scholarships to public schools.
