I am currently studying for a PhD in Particle Physics at the University of Edinburgh; I have a master’s degree in physics from the University of Durham, and I received 10 A*s at GCSE and A*A*AA at A-Level (Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry). I have had a passion for the sciences- and learning in general- for as long as I can remember. I love physics because it provides links between tiny atoms and huge galaxies, and physics concepts appear in so many other disciplines; I find it very exciting that I am learning equations that can predict the origins and future of the universe.
Education and sharing knowledge is important to me- having worked as a private tutor and personal statement editor in the past, I listen to feedback from my students and aim to make lessons both challenging and fun and aim to instil a thorough understanding of topics rather than just promoting the memorisation of information. Studying doesn’t have to be boring!
I understand that the university application process and any exams are very stressful times for students, and so promote self-care, taking regular breaks, and remembering that one’s grades are important but should not be prioritised over one’s mental wellbeing.
2021 - present – Undergraduate Teaching Assistant – University of Edinburgh, UK
Teaching assistant for undergraduate modules: I have taught both small groups and larger workshop classes.
Further responsibilities have included preparing tutorial material, marking and giving feedback for assignments and class tests.
2018 - 2023 – Private Tutor – MyTutor
Online tutor of Mathematics and Sciences at GCSE and A-Level and adviser on university
applications/personal statements. The role has aided my organization and communication skills; I have been
able to increase students’ self confidence and develop their academic ability.
2020 - 2021 – Coronavirus Tutoring Initiative
Tutor of mathematics and the sciences at GCSE and A-Level, for students whose education has been interrupted by COVID-19 and would otherwise not be able to access private tutoring. As an experienced tutor, I was part of the team organising the project, and contributed advice, resources, and helped to present a webinar to train new tutors who wanted to volunteer with the scheme.
- Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths at GCSE and A-Level (all UK exam boards)
- Personal statements for UK university admission
The class ran smoothly, we went over different topics covered in revision sessions and went over a few past paper questions to guide me and help me understand in detail.
Really good lesson, my tutor explained everything in clear detail and an understanding way.
"Holly is simply a wonderful teacher and has worked really hard to help my daughter in science. My daughter comes down from her room each time and says what a great lesson she's had and Holly writes a report after each lesson summarising what was done and any issues. Would definitely recommend."
- Richard, parent of a student
"Holly is very patient and good at explaining complicated concepts in a very simple way!"
- Aman, parent of a student
