Hello, my name is Ellen. I am a fully qualified teacher from a Russell Group University. I have over 10 years experience in the classroom, working in private schools and in the state sector. Alongside teaching, I developed my tutoring business before moving into tutoring full-time. I have been privileged to tutor students from different backgrounds and different abilities over the last 10 years.
I am also a current examiner for GCSE Chemistry, as I strongly believe that it is vital to keep my knowledge up to date. This role also enables me to help my students perform optimally in their exams. I treat each student as an individual with different strengths and weaknesses. This means that I create a learning plan according to their needs. The first step is to identify knowledge gaps. The second step is to fill these gaps and then go on to practise answering exam questions, so that they gain confidence and self-belief. I feel that I am an approachable and friendly tutor. It also helps that I am a mum to children who have been through the exam system, so I understand parents' point of view!

About Me

I am half Norwegian and enjoy a spot of cross- country skiing when I can, although I have lived for most of my life in the UK.

We have two golden retriever dogs in our family so I spend quite a lot of time walking them.

I like to visit my local health club and go swimming regularly.

Tutor Experience

Hi
My name is Ellen and teaching plus tutoring is my professional career, which means that I am expertly placed to help your son or daughter. Prior to teaching, I spent a year in scientific research , working for the Overseas Development Natural Resources Institute. I also spent my summers teaching TEFL, whilst at university. This made me realise that my strengths lay in teaching, not academic research.
Since then I have taught in quite a few different schools, ranging from top academic performing grammar schools to inner city comprehensive schools.
I have taught and tutored GCSE chemistry, biology, physics and maths for many years. I am also an examiner for GCSE chemistry (current). This means that I am able to tutor the content required, but equally importantly teach my students how to interpret and answer the exam questions to gain maximum marks.
My approach is to individually tailor tutoring to each student. Initially, I email a past exam paper and return it marked and annotated. This gives me an idea of the gaps that need filling. Then I ask for a list of the topics that they are struggling with the most. I reteach these together with the listed topics. Together we then craft the answers to past paper topic questions and I explain what specific phrases to use to gain the maximum marks. I enjoy using available technology, such as whiteboards and quizzes; as well as more traditional revision techniques such as flashcards, which we produce together. I also ask my students how they learn best e.g. visual/auditory learner.

I like to think that I am friendly, approachable and a good mentor for my students so that they feel comfortable and enjoy our sessions.
