About Me

I am a South African citizen who relocated to the UAE in March 2022 to join my husband. Given our lifestyle, I work remotely, allowing me the flexibility to pursue multiple passions. Towards the end of 2023, I launched an educational YouTube channel and actively participate in pharmacy-related webinars whenever possible. Teaching is my true passion, and I find great fulfillment in helping others achieve their goals. Believing in the importance of diversification and reaching one’s full potential, I also teach English as a Foreign Language remotely. Beyond work, I have a deep love for animals, enjoy hiking, and am an active member of a book club. Staying fit is a priority, and I incorporate gym, yoga, and pilates into my routine. To keep life interesting, I also attend painting workshops from time to time.

Tutor Experience

I hold four pharmacy-related degrees, including a PhD in Pharmacy, and have 18 years of academic experience. In South Africa, I was a senior lecturer at a School of Pharmacy, where I taught all levels of the BPharm curriculum. The institution followed a problem-based learning (PBL) approach and a modular course structure, covering each body system from anatomy and physiology to disease conditions and their pharmacological management.

Throughout my career, I coordinated and facilitated several pharmacy-related modules, including Community-Based Pharmaceutical Care, Endocrine and Reproductive Pharmacy, Hospital-Based Pharmaceutical Care, Cardiovascular Pharmacy, Neurological and Psychiatric Pharmacy, Respiratory Pharmacy, and Pharmacy Practice Theory and Practicals. Additionally, I taught postgraduate students in Clinical Pharmacy and accompanied them on clinical ward rounds. I was appointed by the South African Pharmacy Council as an examiner and moderator for Pharmacist Interns and also mentored academic interns.

In March 2022, I relocated to the UAE, where I served as an Assistant Professor in a part-time faculty position at a university in Ras al-Khaimah for one academic year. Over the years, I have contributed to the field through research, publishing 22 articles in reputable international journals. Currently, I act as an external examiner upon request and review manuscripts. Recognizing the importance of diversification, I also obtained a 160-hour TEFL certificate to teach English as a foreign or second language.

RE: Recommendation Letter: Deirdre Engler
To Whom it may concern,
I was a MPharm student at SMU, graduating from the clinical pharmacy program in 2020. During my master’s program I was fortunate to have been allocated Mrs D Engler as supervisor for my mini-research dissertation. From the start Deirdre was supportive, focused and structured in her approach to assisting me through this process. She set clear timelines, communicated regularly and was honest and constructive in her feedback. With her assistance and dedication, I was able to finish my dissertation and graduate within the allocated 4-year period.
Deirdre’s dedication to her students is clear, she made sure she was available and gave time to develop her students. Her kind, compassionate and professional demeanor drives students to achieve their best. Future students would be fortunate to have her as a teacher and supervisor.
Warm regards,
Kim Nagoor

Letter of recommendation for Ms Deirdré Engler
To whom this may concern
Ms Deirdré Engler was one of my lecturers during my academic internship (M.Pharm Clinical
pharmacy) 2019/2020. She is very passionate about pharmacy and takes her role as lecturer
very seriously. Ms Engler is always well prepared for a session and communicates effectively
with students to also be well prepared beforehand. She includes different teaching methods
to make sure students will remember the session as good as possible. This includes
presentations, quizzes, and homework in the form of case studies or a type of assignment.
She always chooses to do things according to the book without compromise despite the risk
of conflict with other (both students and colleagues). Ms Engler has a big heart and she
always goes the extra mile. Her work is very thorough and of highest standard. With this
being said I can say with all honesty that Ms Deirdré Engler will be a great asset to any
institution. Any student will benefit from having her as their lecturer. She is strict about
what is right and wrong and always make sure schedules are followed as they should be.
Wherever Ms Engler is part of, there is order and structure. Because of her great work
etiquette and thoroughness, I even recommended her as a tutor and supervisor to a friend
who started her M.Pharm as academic intern at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences
University. She is not only a great lecturer, but also an inspiring individual who I see as a
mentor. During the tough times of lockdown and all uncertainties Ms Engler encouraged us
with motivational messages. She even arranged online meetings with other clinical
pharmacists as reminder of why we started the academic internship. She will not only be an
asset as lecturer to students, but also a great colleague and mentor.
Yours sincerely,
Sonja Grobbelaar

To Whom It May Concern:
It is my pleasure to recommend Mrs Deirdré Engler for professional advancement.
I am Kgarebe Mogale, a former postgraduate student who studied under her supervision
towards a master’s degree at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. I spent two years
working closely with her on my study and have, as a result, come to learn her traits.
During our time together, Mrs Engler displayed meticulous talents in mapping out tasks with
particular attention to detail, breaking tasks down to smaller, manageable components, and
ensuring that every aspect has been adequately covered. This standard she sets, not only for
herself, but for all affiliated with her, which can, at times, prove a tall order for any supervisee.
She exhibits commendable project and time management skills, this being one of the first
qualities I recognized and was impressed by about her as a student of hers.
In the time I studied under her, Mrs Engler proved resourceful in identifying alternative
measures in exigent instances thanks to her good organizational skills as a supervisor and as a
lecturer. As a result, she pushed me continuously to meet deadlines timeously regardless of
unforeseen interruptions to the academic year to complete the requirements of my course within
the prescribed time.
Sincerely,
Kgarebe T. Mogale (BPharm.(SMU), MPharm. Clin.(SMU)

Promotions Committee
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University
Dear Committee Members
RE: APPLICATION FOR PROMOTION – MRS DEIRDRÉ ENGLER
I hereby write in support of Mrs Deirdré Engler’s application for promotion to Senior Lecturer in the School of
Pharmacy at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Mrs Deirdré Engler is currently employed as a lecturer in
the Division of Clinical Pharmacy, in the School of Pharmacy. I have known her for the past 15 years, firstly as a part-time staff member and then as full-time lecturer in my capacity as the Course Coordinator of the BPharm Programme.
More recently, since 2018, I have also worked with her in my capacity as the main supervisor of her Doctoral study.
During my working relationship with Mrs Engler, I have experienced her as a very conscientious and reliable person,
extremely dedicated towards her teaching and research responsibilities. She always plans in advance, and sets
appropriate, specific and challenging goals for herself. Mrs Engler has a passion for quality and strives to maintain the relevant standards, despite challenges. She upholds great work ethics, always produces what is expected of her to the best of her ability, and ensures that timelines are met.
Mrs Engler has excelled over the years as a researcher, as is evident from her academic-, publication and postgraduate student supervision record. As her supervisor, I am very pleased with her achievements. She completed her PhD in what I would call ‘record time’, produced an excellent thesis and will be graduating at the upcoming graduation ceremony this year. Using the words of one of the examiners: “This thesis is an embodiment of an excellent and significant research work. Excellent especially in design, effort and relevance. Its significance will definitely be felt not only after publication of its findings to the South African Health System but importantly by those who participated in the surveys and had the opportunity to listen to others’ wins and challenges concerning antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).” Her first article has already been published in an international journal and she has presented various papers at conferences. I am convinced that she will transfer these skills to her future students and that she will be very successful in her future endeavors as a researcher.

On a personal level, I have always found Mrs Engler to be an honest, hardworking, intelligent and trustworthy
individual, someone who will walk the extra mile.

Yours sincerely
Hannelie (JC) Meyer

To whom it may concern
I have Known Dr Engler for the past 14+ years in various professional capacities including being her
immediate supervisor as a lecturer in the department of pharmacy, when I was the BPharm Course
coordinator, and as a co-convenor in one of the 4th year modules.
Dr Engler is one of the most dedicated lecturers in the department; she has overseen the dispensing
assessments of all modules in the School in the past 3 years. She has been a module convenor of three
different modules and most years she coordinated two BPharm modules per year. As a lecturer, she went
the extra mile to ensure that students understand the content of her courses. Dr Engler has also been
involved in the supervision of both the undergraduate and postgraduate projects. In this capacity, Dr
Engler has demonstrated her passion for developing people and encouraging them to reach their full
potential.
