About Me
I am a UK-qualified teacher with nearly 30 years’ experience working with students in the UK and internationally. I have taught in schools and colleges in the UK, China, Italy, Serbia and Spain, working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.
My main areas of expertise are History and English, particularly at GCSE and A Level. I have extensive experience preparing students for examinations and helping them understand not just the subject content, but how to turn their knowledge into effective exam answers.
A particular strength of my teaching is helping students who understand the material but are not yet achieving the grades they are capable of. I focus on identifying what is limiting their marks — whether that is essay structure, analysis, use of evidence, answering the question directly or exam technique — and then giving them practical strategies to improve.
I take a relaxed and supportive approach to tutoring. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, while also giving them clear and honest feedback about what they need to do to improve. My aim is for students to become more confident and, importantly, more independent in their approach to exams.
Alongside my school teaching, I have substantial experience in online and one-to-one tutoring, including recent work with GCSE English Language and Literature and A Level History students. I particularly enjoy working with students who have a clear target and want to make measurable progress.
Tutor Experience
I have nearly 30 years’ experience teaching and tutoring in UK schools and colleges, as well as internationally in China, Italy, Serbia and Spain. I am a qualified teacher with a PGCE in Secondary History and QTS, and have taught students across a wide range of ages, abilities and educational backgrounds.
My main specialisms are History and English. I have taught GCSE and IGCSE History, GCSE and IGCSE English Language and Literature, and A Level History, English Language and Literature. I have also prepared students for 11+, 13+ Common Entrance and pre-ISEB examinations, as well as supporting students for whom English is an additional language.
I have experience with almost all major UK and international examination boards, including OCR, Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge International (CIE) and WJEC. This has given me a broad understanding of different specifications and the approaches required to achieve high marks.
A major focus of my teaching is exam technique: essay writing, source analysis, answer structure, effective use of evidence and developing the analysis required for higher mark bands. I particularly enjoy helping students who understand the subject but struggle to turn their knowledge into marks.
I have extensive History experience covering the World Wars, Germany, Russia and the USSR, and the Cold War. More recently, I tutored WJEC GCSE English Language and Literature and OCR A Level History through Sherpa (January–June 2026), and I currently teach online through Talented China.
My approach is practical and individualised. I identify where students are losing marks, explain what stronger answers require, and work through examples and exam questions to help them apply these skills independently.
