About Me

Teaching has never given me a dull moment: from learning my trade is schools around Bristol, I then taught at the prestigious Millfield School for 3 years, taking on roles such as live-in assistant and athletics English Schools Cup manager, using my mathematical skills to optimise the number of points that we could achieve as a team! I went on to teach in China for a year, showing my versatility by adapting to teach the IB curriculum when asked to at the last minute. I completed my masters in maths education here, after previously obtaining a PhD in theoretical physics. I returned to the UK to settle down and continue to enjoy teaching. For a new challenge I decided to tutor online, whilst also creating a YouTube channel and becoming editor of Mathematical Angles, a Maths Association magazine. I continue to strive to be the best teacher that I can be, to challenge myself with mathematics and to help students improve at the subject.

Tutor Experience

I taught in public/private/international schools as well as a Sixth Form college for 10 years. For the past 3 years I have been a maths tutor, mostly online. I like to set additional tasks after lessons as practice is crucial. I have developed resources to assists with this including video solutions to many exam questions.

My main strength is that I can adapt to students. I identity areas where they need to improve. On one occasion I taught someone who has missed a lot of school, so I efficiently covered areas where I could see they struggled and raised their attainment significantly. With another student I was asked to stretch and challenge them, which I did. I motivated them to try Further Maths A Level, something they were unsure about - it later became their favourite A Level. I can also teach students who struggle - a recent success story was teaching solving two-step equations and then percentages to a year 8 who struggles. I went back to multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 to help with the latter as I could see this was a barrier for them. I have a masters in maths education, my dissertation focusing on rich tasks.

My pedagogy is one where I put the student first and help them discover and enjoy the subject, in line with the likes of Colin Foster and Stephanie Prestage/Pat Perks. If one paper was to define my view on teaching then it would be the latter's 'Doing Maths or Practising the Finished Product' -
