I am a super experienced tutor, who priorities engaging you with your subject, and tailoring my input to your strengths and mindset. The advantage of tuition should always be to make sure you feel listened to and noticed. If you are finding any part of your work too easy, too difficult or simply too boring to engage with, I will find a way to bridge that gap.
I tutor English Literature up to degree level. I also help lots of students taking their A levels or GCSEs in History, English Language or Philosophy, and I can give you really solid techniques to help you approach essay questions, substantiate your own ideas and convey them in the kind of well expressed written work that exam boards award high marks to.
I am also super experienced with helping students improve their scores in maths, science, and verbal/non verbal reasoning in their Eleven-plus, Key Stage 3 and GCSE exams.
I have a creative writing degree, and have written twelve audio stories for podcast Happened Here, performed by esteemed actor Stephen Fry. I have run several creative writing and storytelling courses, and can provide creative writing input from Key Stage 3 up until degree level and for adults.
I am also a trained TESOL teacher with a CELTA qualification (the best initial TESOL qualification). If English is not your first language, I can give you lots of support and solid techniques to help you understand your work, and make sure this doesn't hold you back.

Hamish has really helped me to understand how to structure my essays and how to include what the examiners will be looking for. His lessons are very friendly, professional and informative. I really recommended him.
Hamish has been helping my son catch up with his English A'level work. He is approachable and very well prepared for each session. My son has been happy to attend and finds them useful.
Hamish has been a big help to my daughter after only 2 sessions - he has broken things down clearly and helped her to think about things in a different way. Very pleased!
Hamish had lots of helpful insight for helping me achieve top marks in my English A levels, he was super friendly and knowledgable. I look forward to my next lesson!
Hamish has recently started tutoring my son. He has quickly built a rapport with him, and is tailoring his sessions carefully to ensure that he builds both confidence and marks along the way. Thank you, Hamish.
"Hamish has been very helpful so far - our son has engaged well with Hamish’s teaching style. As GCSE’s are a very stressful time and the work load is large-It’s great that Hamish is making a difference already."

"Hamish taught me for an extended period and was nothing short of incredible. He was patient and yet didn't hesitate to challenge me in areas of creative writing to adopt better techniques. It was a privilege to be taught by him. I would recommend Hamish to anyone working to improve their writing style."

Michael, father of twins studying English Literature and Language at GCSE
"We are have been really pleased with the sessions provided for my son by Hamish. The change in my son's confidence in essay writing has been incredible, and based on his latest report this has been reflected in his predicted A level grades which have now moved up a grade. During a recent parents evening, all of his school teachers remarked on the difference too. Hamish has been able to get to the crux of my sons issues and help to focus his attention in the right areas. The added bonus of this is my son now wishes to continue to study the subject in University."

Sarah (Ms) (Mother of English Literature and Philosophy A-level student)
"From first meeting Hamish to our last of many lessons over two months later, I can honestly say that the experience has been incredible. Hamish cut to the root of my problems regarding the structuring of essays and how to write a more persuasive argument. He was flexible with his time and when I felt pressured he was quick to calm me down and impress a logical plan to solve the problem at hand. Without Hamish`s help I would have produced a substandard piece of work. This was not because of a lack of research or reading of primary texts on my part. Rather it`s because what I lacked was the ability to convey a persuasive argument. In showing me how to do this, Hamish proved himself to be invaluable. I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone in a similar situation to mine."
