About Me
I have taught for 35 years in a variety of state secondary schools in north London and Hertfordshire. I love my subjects - History and Politics - and have contributed to secondary school textbooks as well as being an examiner for many years. I retired recently from full-time teaching but I am not ready to give up yet! I have tutored for a few years and wish to develop this now I have more time.
Tutor Experience
I have 35 years teaching experience in state secondary schools. In that time I have taught several versions of History GCSE and 'A' level Politics and History, all the main exam boards and a wide variety of topics, from Medieval English, European and World History as well as British and American Politics. I have taught several different versions of History 'A' level coursework and have supervised assignments on a wide variety of subjects - everything from independence movements in the British Empire to the Medieval Polish monarchy and even ancient history! In recent years I have started private tutoring and have helped students prepare for AQA and EDEXCEL Politics as well as OCR and EDEXCEL History. I have found my classroom experience has made me a successful tutor, particularly helping students with different strengths to develop the confidence to weigh up ideas and reach justified conclusions.
Topic Expertise
I have lots of experience teaching GCSE modern world and British history topics for AQA, EDEXCEL and OCR. My favourite GCSE paper is probably the History of Medicine
My 'A' level History teaching has included the Tudors and Stuarts, 20th Century British and European History and several American and World History topics. I have overseen hundreds of 'A' level History non-examined assignments (NEAs) on many subjects
My politics teaching experience has been focussed on British and American topics for AQA and EDEXCEL

Comments: Hugh was a great tutor, with a depth of knowledge of Politics. I would highly recommend him as I used him for my A-Levels and with his aid and guidance I went from getting D/Cs in my politics mocks to achieving an A in the final exam. I will forever be grateful to him because with his expert knowledge his was able to point out the mistake I was making in my essay style and demonstrated to me how to write a good essay. Using the skills and knowledge his taught me I was able to achieve the grades I wanted. Finally if you are looking for an A-Level tutor I couldn’t recommend Hugh enough, he will aid you in achieving the grades you want.
