I am a charismatic and creative mathematician with a strong background in both teaching and research. I have experience in teaching a large variety of students -- from one on one tutoring for primary/secondary students to lecturing graduate students in mathematics. I whole heartedly fight against the idea that certain students "are bad at mathematics" and believe in catering my techniques and explanations to each individual to help unlock everyone's capacity to understand and succeed in mathematics. My teaching focuses on true understanding as opposed to rote memorisation with a very hands-on and concept based approach, helping students discover new ideas on their own and gain personal ownership of their understanding.
I started tutoring mathematics during my bachelors degree in mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin. I privately tutored local students who were in secondary school and doing university preperation. During my PhD, I continue to privately tutor university students in mathematics while formally teaching numerous modules of calculus as well as modules geared for mathematics students, such as abstract algebra and discrete mathematics. I was also invited and was involved in a special teaching development program to help build my techniques. After my PhD, I worked at Imperial College London as a researcher where I was involved in mentoring and lecturing. I lectured a module for advanced undergraduate and master students in Algebraic Geometry and also supervised undergraduate summer research projects and masters theses. In all my teaching experience, I have always received very positive feedback which often commented on my patience and ability to explain concepts in different ways.
Mathematics, at essentially all levels
Jonathan has the ability to put my son at ease and get him to focus quickly on the task. He is patient and super knowledgeable and my son has improved so much in just a few weeks his expected GCSEs grades are already higher.
