About Me
Following careers in the Army and the Law, I have been a teacher and private tutor for twenty five years, the last twenty in a private school in Ewell Surrey. I was Head of Department for History and Classics and I have recently stepped down to three days a week, making me available for more private tuition.
I enjoy long distance cycling, walking, reading and gardening. In 2025 I completed the nine hundred kilometer pilgrimage route to Santiago di Compostella. It was tough but I managed it in six weeks.
At school I run the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
I really believe in making History and Classics interesting and inspiring. This has been a very successful approach over the years. I have led forty five international trips over the years and more trips in the United Kingdom than I can remember. Battlefields trips to the Somme and visits to Pompeii are highlights.
I am married with two children at University. I am very proud of them.
Tutor Experience
I have over 25 years of classroom experience as a Head of Department. I have also tutored extensively on line and in person. I have an excellent track record of identifying problem areas and helping pupils solve them. This ensures they perform to their best in examinations.
I have taught KS3 GCSE and A level across History, Classical Civilization and Government and Politics. and I am very experienced and knowledgeable. I have taught AQA Edexcel and OCR. I have also taught IGCSE History and the IB.
I have tutored for a tutoring agency and in person both online and in person. I also tutored for five years for the Chelsea Football Academy which was a most interesting experience.
I always establish a good relationship with a pupil. I can then work out what their problems are . Invariably they are lack of knowledge, problems with structuring an essay and difficulties with sources. All of these can be addressed and I have a well established method of teaching pupils how to structure answers in a way that will please the examiner. I can also explain the factual content and major themes of a course in a way that pupils will understand and remember. I can arrange and mark extra homework if needed and I give constructive feedback. I have excellent resources online to help them.
Perhaps even more importantly, I can improve their confidence and show them they can succeed.
Before taking on a pupil I like to have a free zoomcall with the parents and the pupil so we can discuss the way forward.

Considering my experience there are very few exam topics that I am not fully familiar with. For example for A level History I can teach German, USA, Italian Russian and British History as well as International Relations and much more. I have taught all the topics for Classical Civilization and Government and Politics. If there are any gaps in my knowledge I will fill them before I tutor your child.
