I’m Nicolas, a specialist quantitative and academic tutor with a background in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics and Finance. I hold an MSc from Imperial College London and a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, Statistics and Financial Economics.
I’m naturally analytical and curious, and I particularly enjoy problem-solving and finding clear ways to explain ideas that initially seem complicated. That is one of the things I enjoy most about tutoring: working out where a student’s understanding has broken down and finding the explanation, example or perspective that makes the concept click.
As a person, I’m calm, patient and approachable. I like lessons to feel focused and purposeful without students feeling uncomfortable about asking questions or getting something wrong. I take academic goals seriously, but I also think students make the most progress when they feel confident enough to think aloud, challenge ideas and learn from their mistakes.
My interests naturally extend beyond tutoring into economics, financial markets, business, technology and current affairs. I particularly enjoy areas where quantitative reasoning connects with real-world decisions and problems.
Ultimately, what I find most rewarding is seeing students become more confident and independent, not simply improving a particular mark, but developing stronger ways of thinking and approaching unfamiliar problems.
I have eight years’ tutoring experience and have taught over 100 learners aged 9–20, both privately and through established tuition agencies. My experience includes one-to-one and small-group teaching across GCSE/iGCSE, A-Level, IB, entrance examinations and university study, with both UK and international students.
I have worked with providers specialising in entrance examinations and international IB tuition, alongside agencies delivering individualised support for local-authority students, including learners with SEN, children in care and students whose education has been disrupted.
My teaching is diagnostic, structured and student-centred. I establish each student’s objectives and gaps before using clear explanations, worked examples, guided practice and increasingly independent questions. I emphasise understanding and application rather than memorisation.
I incorporate active recall, spaced repetition, past-paper analysis, model answers, timed practice and individual error logs to strengthen retention and exam technique. For entrance examinations, I also use pacing strategies, problem-solving drills and question-trap awareness.
Online, I use an iPad and digital whiteboard to work interactively in real time, alongside screen sharing and shared resources. I have also led structured online groups of up to ten students.
Students have achieved improvements of 1–3 grades where tuition, homework and exam practice have been maintained consistently. My wider aim is to develop confident, organised and increasingly independent learners.
At university level, I support Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Business and Finance, particularly mathematical methods, statistical and quantitative reasoning, finance concepts, applied problems and data-response work. I have also guided six students through undergraduate and postgraduate applications, including personal statements, course selection, UCAS and direct applications.
At A-Level, I teach Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Economics, Business and Computer Science. I support both subject knowledge and examination technique through specification-led teaching, worked examples, past papers, model answers and targeted error analysis.
At GCSE/iGCSE, I teach Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Economics, Business and Computer Science, alongside Chemistry and Biology. I have experience across AQA, Edexcel, Cambridge/CIE, OCR and WJEC, adapting tuition to the relevant specification and assessment objectives.
I also support IB Maths and Physics at Higher Level, focusing on conceptual understanding, quantitative problem-solving and past-paper preparation.
For 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance, I specialise in Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning, including numerical reasoning, problem-solving, pattern recognition, pacing and timed examination practice.
Across levels, my particular strength is helping students progress beyond content recall towards stronger technical methods, analytical reasoning and confident application to unfamiliar questions.
