I hold a PhD in English Literature and have been awarded a Fellowship of the UK's Higher Education Academy for my substantive experience teaching, assessing, and supporting the learning of undergraduate and graduate students and adult learners within 1:1 tutorial and small-group teaching environments, both in the UK and internationally. I specialise in teaching English Literature and Humanities subjects, University Admissions, academic essay writing, and study skills in a supportive, welcoming, and enthusiastic tutoring environment.
Educationally, I am a PhD graduate in English Literature from the University of Birmingham (UK) working on late-Victorian authors. I received my Master of Studies in English (1830-1914) from the University of Oxford and was trained in working with rare archives. I received a First-Class BA in English from the University of Warwick. My PhD encourages interdisciplinary nineteenth-century research, so I work in related academic disciplines, including History, Religion and Gender Studies.
At the University of Oxford, I am a Teaching Associate in English for the Astrophoria Foundation Year. At the University of Birmingham, I have lectured at undergraduate and postgraduate level in English Literature and academic writing, have received multiple funding grants, worked as a Research Assistant for Birmingham’s Nineteenth-Century Centre and co-founded a university-wide reading group. I am currently an Honorary Fellow at Durham University for my role as Deputy Associate Director of Research for the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies International. As a Lecturer in English at the University of British Columbia (Corpus Christi College) in Vancouver, Canada, I designed, taught, and assessed the undergraduate ‘Introduction to Literary Genres’ course. At the University of Oxford, I taught university access lessons for charity Universify at St. Hugh’s and Somerville College, and privately tutor students in English Literature, History, Education, and as an Admissions Consultant.
I am currently a Teaching Associate in English at the University of Oxford. As a Fellow of the UK's Higher Education Academy, I have substantive experience teaching undergraduates and postgraduates in 1:1 tutorials in the UK and internationally. At the University of Birmingham, I have been a Seminar Tutor and Lecturer for undergraduate English Literature ‘Decadents and Moderns’, 'Gothic', and Masters 'Empire and Imagination' modules, teaching and delivering lectures to 200+ students. As a Lecturer in English at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), I designed and taught the undergraduate ‘Introduction to Literary Genres’ course. As a Teaching Associate for the Academic Writing Service at Birmingham, I delivered 1:1 tutorials in Humanities subjects across the College of Arts and Law to improve academic essay writing and study techniques, and interpretation of marking criteria and feedback.
As an Applications Mentor for international students applying to prestigious UK universities, I use 1:1 mentoring tutorials to develop applications and linguistic confidence. Mindful of cultural difference, I foster inclusive learning environments by avoiding feedback or language which alienates. I received a Horizon Award at Birmingham for training in seminar teaching and cultural differences in the classroom.
As a tutor, I share my academic experiences and passions with students to create a shared, supportive learning environment. I support students in taking an active role in learning by building and maintaining rapport through friendly exchanges and ensure they always feel comfortable asking questions. My tutoring provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students of all backgrounds.
In 2014, I was an English and Maths Tutor at Explore Learning and tutored children aged 5 to 14 of all abilities. I was responsible for enhancing children’s academic progress whilst handling behavioural issues and safeguarding procedures, alongside working as an Examinations Invigilator at the UK's top performing sixth-form.
I specialise in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate (MA and PhD) English Literature and Humanities subjects (including History, and the History of Science and Medicine), university admissions (including Oxford, Cambridge, Russell Group, and US Ivy League), academic essay and dissertation or thesis writing, and study and research skills in a supportive, welcoming, and enthusiastic tutoring environment.
Good. Progress towards the end goal is being made. I'm very glad to have Emily's critical perspective on the work I send her.
Student feedback ̶ MA Creative Writing
• Emily was incredibly accommodating, kind, informative, proactive and a genuine joy to work with. I began this process quite overwhelmed. Her guidance helped soothe my anxieties and hone in on what I truly want out of a post-grad experience. Not only did she help me secure a spot at my top school, but she also built up my confidence in my craft and abilities.
Student feedback ̶ English Literature (Victorian and Neo-Victorian Literature) Undergraduate Dissertation
• “Emily was a fantastic tutor. She was patient, enthusiastic, and eager to help me achieve my goals. She went above and beyond to ensure that I got the most out of the sessions and was always attentive. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking to improve their writing skills. More than anything, my sessions with Emily helped to improve my confidence. It was this improved confidence which allowed for my grades to improve: I achieved improved results in all my modules and graduated with a First class degree.”
Student feedback ̶ PGCE Primary Course (University of Manchester) Application support
• “I am really grateful to Emily for all her help. Emily really helped me with my confidence, she gave me all the assurances I needed while writing my Personal Statement and while practicing for interviews. She really helped me to be myself and enjoy the process”.
• “She was always very prompt to let me know her timings that she’d be available so that we could work something out and she sent me feedback emails after every session that helped me think things through. She was so positive and her energy was infectious. She helped me to hone in on strengths and to structure myself in how I spoke which was sound advice, practicing with her really helped me to be confident for my interviews. I think she’s wonderful!”
Student feedback ̶ English Literature (Medieval) Masters
• “My tutor, Emily, taught me so much. From her, I learned how to organize my plans better, network among various academics, and above all, how to get small increments of work done by specific deadlines. I got into Oxford, as well as Columbia University and the University of Arizona, because she helped me. Her insight has helped me think about my career. I am very thankful for pairing me with someone so helpful and resourceful”.
Student feedback ̶ English Literature (Victorian) Masters
• “I had a truly amazing experience with my tutor, Emily. She went above and beyond helping me through every step of the application process and was constantly there for me even when I changed my mind or had a mini panic. I honestly could not recommend her enough - she is kind, thorough, super detail-oriented, and genuinely amazing at what she does. I will certainly use her again in the future if I have more applications and would recommend her to anyone”.
