Away from teaching I enjoy spending time with my young family, supporting AFC Wimbledon FC and watching as much cricket as I can. I also love playing Padel!
My Teaching Approach
I believe effective tutoring is about more than simply teaching additional content. The key is identifying exactly what is preventing a student from progressing and giving them the tools to overcome it.
I break complex skills into clear, manageable steps, model effective approaches and use questioning and discussion to develop students' own thinking. My feedback is specific and practical, so students understand exactly what they need to do to improve.
I adapt every lesson to the individual student. Whether the goal is to rebuild confidence, secure a target grade or move from a strong grade towards the very highest level, my aim is to help students make meaningful progress while becoming increasingly confident and independent learners.
I am an experienced English teacher, former Head of English and Assistant/Deputy Headteacher with 20 years' experience in secondary education. I specialise in GCSE and A-Level English, combining extensive classroom experience with expertise in exam preparation, literacy, metacognition and independent learning.
Throughout my career, I have taught students across the full ability range, from those struggling with confidence or core skills to high-achieving students aiming for the very highest grades.
As a Head of English, I have a strong track record of improving outcomes. In one school, I helped raise GCSE English results from 46% to 66% A*–C. In another, English GCSE attainment increased from approximately 65% to 85% at grades 4–9, alongside strong progress outcomes.

Ben has been tutoring my son for GCSE English, and we have been extremely pleased with the support he has provided.
From the very first session, Ben took the time to assess my son's strengths and areas for development and quickly put together a clear, structured approach tailored to his needs. His lessons are engaging, well organised, and focused on building both confidence and skills.
What has impressed me most is the quality of Ben's communication. He regularly provides updates on what has been covered, the progress made and the areas being targeted next. It is reassuring as a parent to know exactly how things are going and to see such a thoughtful and professional approach.
My son genuinely enjoys the sessions and has spoken positively about Ben's teaching style, particularly the way he explains concepts and uses high-grade examples to demonstrate what strong answers look like. In just a short period, we have already seen improvements in his confidence, engagement and academic writing.
Ben is knowledgeable, encouraging, reliable and clearly passionate about helping his students succeed. I would not hesitate to recommend him to other parents looking for high-quality English tuition.
