I’m a teacher, academic, therapist, and published researcher with a background in special educational needs, linguistics, and music, and a long-standing commitment to inclusive and supportive learning. My career has spanned mainstream and special needs schools, work with adults with complex needs and disabilities, and over 14 years teaching in Higher Education. Across these settings, my focus has always been on helping people communicate, learn, and thrive in ways that work for them.
One constant throughout my career has been my love of communication. I’m fascinated by the science of how language develops, and equally by the individuality of how each of us communicates. Earlier in my career, I worked with young adults who had little speech, and together we found creative ways to communicate through music. I learned to listen carefully and adapt my own communication – this learning shaped how I teach and support students today. As a tutor, I’m particularly skilled at helping students untangle complex ideas, develop clarity in their thinking, and gain confidence in expressing their own ideas using their unique academic voice.
Although I now hold a PhD, I didn’t follow a traditional academic route. My academic journey began in my late 20s, when I began undergraduate study via distance learning, whilst also working and raising a family. Most recently, in my 50s, I attended university for the first time as a student to train as a Speech and Language Therapist. This has given me a lived understanding of what it means to be a student in the 2020s, and why an empathetic and flexible approach from tutors matters as much as clarity. In short, I bring both academic expertise and a grounded, realistic approach to study. My aim is always to help students feel supported, capable, and confident in their own skills.
I’ve been teaching for over 20 years, including 14 years at university level, and during that time I’ve supported hundreds of students across subjects including psychology, child development, disability, music and the brain, research methods, and ethics. I’ve worked extensively with students on dissertations and research projects, supporting them from the planning stages through to final write-up. My experience includes working with learners from diverse backgrounds and with different learning needs, from those new to academic writing to confident, ambitious postgraduate students and researchers.
The modules I’ve created and led draw on psychology, biology, sociology, policy, and research methods, but whatever the subject, my teaching approach is the same: to make complex information accessible and to support students in developing strong, independent academic thinking. As a tutor in academic writing, my aim is to help you articulate what you already know, understand complex ideas more clearly, and express your thinking confidently in your own words. Having marked thousands of academic assignments, I can help you organise and present your ideas with clarity and rigour - and, crucially, to develop the skills needed to critically evaluate your own work and become more confident and autonomous. As a dissertation coach, I can also support you to explore your topic in depth, understand research methods, and make sense of your findings.
I offer 1:1 online sessions and detailed written feedback. In tutorials, I begin by understanding what you need and what you already know, so we can build from a strong foundation. My feedback is careful, detailed, and developmental, designed to support both immediate progress and long-term confidence.

Without Tracy’s support, as a neurodivergent and disabled student I would not have come close to passing. Tracy was there as more than a typical tutor, she really cared and gave me all the support I needed.

Tracy really helped me enhance my dissertation by identifying my gaps during tutor sessions, ensuring my dissertation was completed to a high standard. I really do recommend her: her excellent work has been the foundation for where I am today.
- Jack, BA Hons student
Tracy supported me with my Masters research and previously my undergraduate degree. Her knowledge and expertise was invaluable and enabled me to succeed. Even in the toughest times, Tracy remained warm, friendly and did everything in her power to help.
- Andi, BA Hons and MA student
I was very lucky to have Tracy as a tutor. She is amazing! Very organised, approachable and knowledgeable. I can hand on heart say that without Tracy providing a ‘how to’ dissertation handbook to follow, I am in no doubt I would not have passed.
