About Me

I studied history at the universities of Exeter, Edinburgh and Royal Holloway. Primarily, I am a historian of modern Russia, but I have studied a variety of periods and regions across my degrees, from ancient Rome up to present. I enjoy helping students see how different periods connect, and how historical arguments are built.

My teaching style is calm and structured. I break things down clearly, give honest and constructive feedback, and help students understand not just what happened, but why it matters and how to write about it with confidence. My lessons are friendly and focused on practical skills: how to plan an essay, how to analyse sources, how to revise effectively, and how to write with confidence.

I enjoy travel and have visited some of the regions I teach on. I am currently working on transforming my PhD on Russian intelligence into a book.

Tutor Experience

I have several years of teaching experience at universities in the UK, including seminars, tutorials, lectures and dissertation supervision. I have taught across modern European history, Russian history, political violence, war studies, historiography and research methods. I have published several articles in academic journals and am working on my first book. My teaching has included small‑group tutorials, structured seminar discussions, one‑to‑one supervision, and detailed written feedback on essays and research projects.

I have supported students at all levels, from first‑year undergraduates to final‑year dissertation writers, helping them improve their analytical skills, essay structure, argumentation, source evaluation and exam technique. My experience includes guiding students through complex topics, developing their confidence, and helping them achieve strong results through structured and supportive teaching.

Alongside my university work, I have also tutored A‑level and GCSE History students privately. This has included exam preparation, revision planning, essay writing support, source analysis, and helping students understand how to meet assessment objectives. I have guided students through challenging topics, improved their confidence with structured feedback, and helped them achieve higher grades through clear, targeted teaching.

Topic Expertise

My specialist area is modern Russian history, including state security, political violence, intelligence institutions and the social and political dynamics of conflict. Alongside this, I have broad teaching experience across modern European history, global history, historiography, and research methods. However, I am also comfortable teaching a wide range of historical periods and themes. In the past, I have also taught GCSE and A-Level students studying the American West, the Tudors, Nazi Germany and the Cold War and am very familiar with the main exam boards such as AQA.
