I learnt French and German at school, benefitting from a series of teachers who used very different approaches, and took off as a practical linguist by spending time in France as a teenager (followed later by time in Germany). As an Oxford graduate of my generation, I am widely read in the literature of both languages as well as meeting the exacting standards of linguistic knowledge you would expect. I took the Mediaeval French option for my degree rather than Linguistics, with Proust as my special paper. 40+ years of teaching across the secondary age range haven't dented my enthusiasm but have taught me that most of the pleasure in my work comes from my students' progress, not from what I teach.
I retired from teaching in 2021 - my experience covered the whole Secondary age range with a focus on all elements of the current AQA A Level syllabus (A Levels have changed many times since I took mine in 1976, and I have taught all of them since 1982!). French and German pose quite different challenges for students, and I have spent my working life enabling learners of a wide ability range, including native speakers, to realise their potential in both. As a teacher and a senior manager in independent schools I have many years’ experience in guiding and advising young people. I have also had a close involvement in educational IT during my career, both as a teaching and learning tool and for school administration. I was largely responsible for setting up the highly successful online teaching and learning programme for my last school in the 2020 lockdown, and as an online teacher myself I found that my students were able to make excellent progress.
As a tutor over the past three years I have taught over 360 hours covering French and German GCSE (AQA and Edexcel), iGCSE German, French and German A Level (AQA and Edexcel) as well as tutoring for the 1st Year undergraduate course in French and German for student at Kings College Cambridge and supporting an undergraduate student taking the Joint Honours course in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.
All of my students up to present have achieved their target grades.
I am equally familiar with AQA and Edexcel GCSE and A Level courses and am happy to support undergraduate students in both languages. I have now 43 years of experience in delivering top results in French and German at all levels. I am equally at home in French and German.
