I am an Economics graduate from the University of Cambridge and now an understanding and relatable tutor with over 1000 hours' experience.
For just under one year, I was employed by a former university tutor to help create a new app for A Level, GCSE and IB Maths. I have also assisted students at the Sutton Trust Summer School in Economics at Cambridge University. Therefore, I have ample experience thinking about ways to support students.
My first foray into tutoring occurred during the summer of 2019. Alongside a friend of mine, I voluntarily supported students taking the CIE A Level Economics qualification via the secure Telegram messaging app. This was a remarkable experience for me, and I was inspired by how it was possible to help students at scale.
Outside of tutoring I can usually be found playing badminton or spending an inordinate amount of time on Google Maps.
I have over 1000 hours' experience; of which over 900 have been completed as part of the National Tutoring Programme. It has been an immense privilege and an honour to support so many students on their journeys.
In 2019 I provided voluntary support for students taking the CIE A Level Economics qualification.
In early 2021, I began tutoring via the National Tutoring Programme. I have since amassed over 1000 hours of experience tutoring students; both privately and for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. My approach to tutoring is based around ensuring students have a firm grasp of the material before enabling them to apply their understanding to practice questions.
My sessions involve rigorous theory to improve students' conceptual understanding of topics as well as ample practice. I am adept at intertwining the two so as to help students understand problems from multiple angles.
A few examples of students I have helped recently include:
.Helping a student who, in their parents' words, were 'behind' in A Level Mathematics, to achieve the A grade required for them to apply for their chosen university courses. We had sessions once a week over a 7 month period.
.Over a period of 10 sessions helping a student who, in their parents' words, were 'struggling', to achieving a borderline A/A* grade in their Year 12 mock exam in Economics and being given an A/A* prediction for their UCAS application
.Over a period of 12 sessions helping a student with an offer for Land Economy from Cambridge to achieve the grade 7 in HL Economics required to meet their offer. The student was strong and very determined but was apprehensive about Paper 1 in particular. I helped them to perfect their answers, with a focus on the 'Theory of the Firm' topic.
As a student I excelled in Economics and Mathematics and I now have over 1000 hours of experience in helping students to grapple with these subjects.
For A Level Economics, I am well versed in tutoring the AQA and Edexcel A courses. For IB Economics, I am comfortable tutoring both the Standard Level and Higher Level courses.
As a student I dropped one mark in the AQA A Level Economics course. Therefore, I have a comprehensive understanding of what examiners are looking for.
I also have a rigorous understanding of the Edexcel A Economics course. Furthermore, I have experience helping students to succeed on the IB HL Economics course, particularly with Paper 1.
For the evaluative essay questions in Economics, I discuss in detail optimal approaches for Introductions, Conclusions and Essay Structures. I also discuss the level of detail required to construct compelling evaluative paragraphs. I put an emphasis on helping students to be confident enough to tackle any question posed of them in an organic way, including those requiring creativity.
I self-taught A Level Further Maths, GCSE Maths, GCSE Statistics and the FSMQ. I hope to use the experiences that I have gained via self-studying and through my own studies to support students in tackling difficult courses. More importantly, I can pass on my understanding and expertise to students who are looking for support.
My sessions are based around the preferences of my students. Based on our initial discussions, I make a long term plan of areas to cover, tailored to their needs. However, I constantly tweak my plans to keep them in line with students' ongoing learning priorities, as well as my assessment of how best I can accelerate their progress.
