About Me

I am a self-employed private tutor based in the South of England. I have traveled widely. I have lived and worked in the UK, Slovakia, Denmark, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and the Middle East. I enjoy running and have completed 35 marathons and ultramarathons. I read a great deal and have just written my autobiography.

I agree with Mark Twain that “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

Tutor Experience

I have taught in a range of international schools in the UK, Europe and Southern Africa since 1997. This includes teaching KS3, GCSE, A-level and IB mathematics and physics. I have been tutoring privately since 2013 and exclusively online since 2018. I have supported students through 13+ and 16+ entrance exams. In the past 12 months, I have taught 600 hours of classes to about 25 students, a typical year.

I make lessons relevant and explain principles clearly, making links where necessary. I encourage interaction through encouragement and careful guidance using a range of appropriate resources.

Topic Expertise

I have helped students gain access to Cambridge, London School of Economics, Kings College, Bristol, to name a few.
I have experience tutoring for 13+ and 16+ entrance exams (St Pauls, Haileybury, and others).
I have taught Edexcel, AQA, OCR, and IB boards for physics and mathematics.
I have helped students improve their grades in GCSE, A-level, and IB.

Lesson notes are all recorded online for reference later. I have paid access to good IB, GCSE and A-level resources. I am confident in using graphing calculators. I was an IB HL examiner for a number of years. I have taken senior students to mathematics competitions for the International Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Federation.

Testimonials

"Alan has tutored our daughter for only five sessions, and during that short time she was able to gain mastery and confidence in the subject. She has found Alan's tutoring to be clear and methodical. His use of the webinar link has been most helpful. We couldn't be happier and only wish we had started sooner."

Parent of online IB SL Maths student

"Alan has been tutoring my Year 8 son, online, in Maths and Physics since August 2019. The initial aim was to support his Maths learning at a high performing independent school but a short time into the sessions it became clear Alan could also support my son in physics. Alan has been quick and thorough at identifying and addressing my son's weaknesses and gaps in his understanding. He pre-planned and led the sessions but equally responded to my son's requests to go over certain topics as needed. He set a small amount of weekly homework and regularly suggested additional resources. My son has benefited enormously from his time with Alan, most notably excelling in Physics and making a significant improvement in Maths. Alan has been very flexible with my son's busy school schedule and has always been online at the scheduled time. He is professional, kind and patient. We highly recommend Alan for Maths or Physics tutoring in a secondary setting."
