I was born in Westminster and educated at an Oxfordshire Boarding School, where I enjoyed a wide range of extracurricular activities. I am a husband and a father to two sons, one who has a Business Degree, while the other has an MSc in Economics. I am also a Black Belt & UKCC Judo coach, who enjoys playing Chess with my students in school and on www.chess.com
My international teaching colleagues would consider me "...empathetic, competent, patient & passionate about teaching..." Before teaching, I enjoyed a successful career working in sales & marketing for Jaguar Cars in the UK, as well as different roles in Chicago, Cape Town & Tokyo. In 2006 I was appointed MD of an international division of FTSE100 giant Allied Domecq, with marketing responsibility for targeted global brand extension of famous brands like Mumm Champagne, Malibu Rum & Laphroaig Scotch Whisky. Such relevant experience helps students to apply their textbook learnings to real life situations - gaining valuable AO2 Application marks.
I am an experienced UK teacher with over 15,000 hours of student contact time, acquired through: Four years as Head of Business in a large UK Secondary School, three years as Head of Business & Economics in Seychelles International School, two years as Head of AP Economics at Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda, then six years as Head of Business & Economics at the International School in Ibiza, Spain. Currently I'm an examiner for Cambridge International, and I have been tutoring students full time since July 2023.
My tutor sessions always focus on your bespoke needs, whether covering specific topics in more detail, general revision or honing exam skills. Some students require just a lesson a week to underscore their learning, whilst I also work exclusively with home schooled students; typically delivering an entire syllabus within a year, through three lessons a week - this can be a viable alternative to VAT on school fees. I predominantly use specialist PPT's and online textbooks, but I can also set homework using past papers, worksheets or revision videos
Most of my 900 lessons each year were delivered in classrooms, but several months of online lessons were effected during "lockdown" in 2020. My speciality is helping struggling students achieve a good pass grade, by breaking down difficult concepts into manageable chunks, though I have also supported motivated students in achieving A* in Cambridge International A-levels, while my top Y11 GCSE students, most years, often achieved an A-grade in their Y12 Cambridge International AS exam.
In addition to being a Cambridge Examiner, for the last 16 years I’ve taught Business Studies GCSE, IGCSE, OCR Nationals, AQA Applied, UK & Cambridge International A ‘levels and lectured as a guest speaker for the Enterprise Department at Buckingham University. Having previously worked for 30 years in multinationals helps to link business theory to reality, gaining AO2 Application marks. I will help students understand concepts so to remember them, rather than learn reams of text off by heart. I will bring a dreary textbook to life, helping to inspire and motivate students.
I also have 11 years’ experience with Cambridge International Economics for both IGCSE and A 'level. And two years teaching AP Economics for both Macro & Micro. My expertise is in explaining Economic concepts to struggling students (especially with English as a second language) for topics including: Price Elasticity, Monopoly, Perfect Competition, the PPC, all Supply & Demand scenarios including international trade & tariffs, Taxes, Consumer & Producer Surplus, LRAS, AS & AD, Cost Curves and Foreign Exchange - to name a few.
Some of my students have three lessons a week with me throughout the year, usually to study an entire syllabus, sometimes home-schooled or without a dedicated teacher. Other students use me once a week to consolidate their learning after school, while helping with homework. Finally, some students contact me just before exams for a few last-minute revision lessons - often these classes prove to be very productive: I will explain how to answer essay questions so as to maximise your marks according to the demands of the Assessment Objectives, while also offering revision PPT's and videos to maximise time & benefits.
Brilliant, fun and explains perfectly.
John is a very experienced and dedicated teacher. He sends lots of informative messages and has presentations planned and well laid out, he sends me the files after. John is very good at explaining each economic term in a very understandable and digestible way using lots of words without giving me information overflow. His explanations are also done in a relatable way, which also makes it much easier to understand and to put into real life perspective.
Thank you very much for your targeted exam preparation

"...Hi John, I wanted to update you and thank you for all the help you have provided over the years especially this last one, since 2 classes a week with you were enough to get me an A-grade when none of the Y13 Business class achieved it, learning 5 hours a week with the Head Teacher! I sincerely wanted to thank you and tell you that you are really the best teacher I’ve had over the years and certainly the funniest and most down to earth..." Ivan, Spain, October 2024.

“…John developed Business Studies & Economics into a real strength of the school; in fact, last year Mr Meyer led a successful group of Year-11 students to complete AS level Business Studies a year early, all of whom achieved A-grades.
John has a strong and caring management style and is an extremely visible and well-respected presence around the school campus. His leadership and organization skills have not gone unnoticed and he has enhanced his role within the school by originally taking on Head of Key Stage-4 responsibilities and in 2016 he was appointed as Head of the Secondary school. ”
