About Me

Hi!

My name's Jonathan, and I recently joined the University of Liverpool to undertake a PhD after six wonderful years lecturing Economics undergraduate and postgraduate students at Manchester Metropolitan University. My PhD is concerned with investigating the behavioural determinants of managerial change, and I'm using professional football as the setting in which to investigate these phenomena. Upon completion of my PhD I would like to return to lecturing, but would also continue to develop my research profile within the intersection of behavioural and sports economics.

Aside from my PhD research, I have an interest in the betting markets for sport, as well as the development of mathematical models that can be used to identify inefficiencies within these markets. Furthermore, I enjoy learning and uncovering new ways in which data can be used to help understand and make predictions about various aspects of professional football.

Tutor Experience

From 2015 to 2021 I lectured hundreds of undergraduate economics students, delivering units in two broad areas: quantitative analysis in economics and finance (combining mathematics with economic theory) and corporate finance (covering topics such as stock market efficiency and portfolio theory). I also ran small-group tutorials for third-year corporate finance students and designed and taught a postgraduate course on applied economic and statistical analysis using STATA.

Teaching cohorts with widely varying mathematical backgrounds required me to develop flexible teaching methods to ensure all students could progress together. This experience directly informs my work as a tutor, where understanding how each student learns allows me to tailor explanations and pacing to their individual needs.

During the 2020/21 academic year, all teaching moved online due to Covid-19. I delivered lectures via Microsoft Teams and Zoom, using screen-sharing with Word and Excel, which often proved clearer and more interactive than traditional classroom teaching. Students could ask questions in real time and clarify difficulties immediately — an approach that remains central to my tutoring style. I prioritise building rapport and working at a pace that allows students to stop me at any point, ensuring they feel supported and never left behind.

Since 2021, I have tutored exclusively online. A sample of modules I have supported includes:

MT1186 Mathematical Methods (LSE)
ST104A Statistics 1 (LSE)
ST104B Statistics 2 (LSE)
FN1202 Introduction to Finance (LSE)
EC2020 Elements of Econometrics (LSE)
FN2203 Principles of Asset Pricing (LSE)
FN2191 Principles of Corporate Finance (LSE)
FN3206 Derivatives and Risk Management (LSE)

Topic Expertise

Mathematical Economics (differentiation and optimisation, matrices, etc.)

Quantitative Finance (asset pricing, derivatives, risk management)

Probability and Statistics (covering the basics of probability theory and statistical inference)

Econometrics (applying statistical methods to economic problems, including modelling and significance testing)

Testimonials

Explains topics plainly and helped me get 100% on my exam - Charlie

Jonny has mountains of knowledge and is superb at tailoring your own needs around the material. He is a genuinely great guy and I couldn’t recommend him highly enough. - Jamie

Jonathan lectured two quantitative modules across the first two years of my economics degree and was an excellent and engaging tutor.

There are two key parts that make a great tutor: subject knowledge and the ability to communicate it. Jonny is brilliant at both.

His tutoring style is built upon a mutual respect and expectation as well as an unwavering willingness to help you understand the subject matter.

On a personal level, Jonny was fun and approachable and I felt able to develop a great relationship with my tutor! - Tom

Great tutor, Jonathan was a massive help through my time at University. He adapts well to a multitude of different learning styles and is a very committed tutor. - William

Had Jonny for 3 years during my economics degree.

He makes it easier, especially for those that arent particularly gifted at mathematics.

Would definitely recommend. - Jon

Jonny was my tutor for three years and he always went out of his way to make sure all the students present understood the complex mathematical concepts within Economics. - Joao

I worked with Jonny in the Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Jonny has a brilliant mind for quants, and is able to explain complex principles and calculations in a relatable way. He applies the principles he teaches to aspects of every day personal and commercial life - which adds depth and relevance to his teaching.

As an educator myself, Jonny is the style of professor I would really get value from. He is approachable, he is challenging, and most importantly, he has the best interests of his students at the forefront of his mind. - Paul

Jonny has been one of the best lecturer/tutor I had during my journey at MMU undertaking my BA in Banking & Finance. In particular he has been able to deliver a top quality teaching for his Corporate and Financial Management unit. Thanks to him and his teaching methodology I've been able to smoothly learn and perform consistently throughout my academic path. - Francesco
