About Me

I come from Ireland and I have been an anthropologist since before I knew such a thing existed! I'm endlessly fascinated by people and by the places they live. That interest has led me to living and working in Japan, the Canadian Arctic, Scotland, England and Spain and living aboard a boat for six years and sailing the western seaboard of Europe. In addition, I've visited countries all over the world.

I love sailing, SCUBA diving and kayaking and I love going for long walks in the hills around my home with my dog. I'm an avid reader. I'm trying hard to become more knowledgeable of physics and chemistry, because I'm fascinated by how the world works at both the smallest and grandest scales.

My travels inspire me to write and my work has been published in various magazines, newspapers and online. I am currently writing a memoir and inspiring others - in face-to-face sessions and online - to write their own life stories too.

Tutor Experience

I was Lecturer in Nature, Society and Development and Lecturer in Human Geography at the Geography Departments at University of Reading (2008-2010) and University of Exeter (2011-2014), respectively. I devised and taught undergraduate and post-graduate human geography modules, including Introduction to Geography, Humans and the Environment, Environmental Change, Geography of the Arctic, and Qualitative Research Methods. I supervised undergraduate and post-graduate dissertation research and writing. I was a subject and a personal tutor and I was responsible for setting and marking exams.

At the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge (2006-2008), I lectured in the Human Geography of the Arctic and was a geography tutor in two colleges.

From 2009-2011, I tutored the Open University Introduction to Social Sciences course, including both online and telephone tutoring and once-monthly face-to-face tutorials.

At the University of Aberdeen (2001-2005), I was an anthropology tutor at all levels of undergraduate study. At Maynooth University (1999-2000), I was a Lecturer in Anthropology and devised, taught and examined Economic Anthropology, co-devised and co-taught Environmental Anthropology of Ireland, and lectured and tutored the first year Introduction to Anthropology.

As an academic editor, I currently mentor students and academics to write dissertations, books and articles.
I also have primary and secondary school teaching experience. In 2014-2015, I was a TEFL teacher to Spanish children, adolescents and adults at the English Centre College of Languages, Almeria, Spain. In 2000-2001, I was volunteer English teacher at Levi Angmak Elementary School, Arviat, Nunavut, Canada. Finally, from 1995-1998, I was an English teacher at the two junior high schools in Sue-machi, Fukuoka-ken, Japan.

My pedagogy is one of inclusion. By listening to and understanding each student’s unique needs, I can effectively communicate course content and create bespoke tutorial sessions and written assignments to meet each student’s learning needs.
