About Me
After graduating I spent a nomadic six years travelling the world as a land surveyor before putting down roots and enjoying a successful thirty years as a classroom teacher, head of department and as the school's Assessment Coordinator.
Tutor Experience
Thirty years of teaching a variety of subjects including IT but with my two main specialisms being Geography and Geology (11-18) and Maths (11-16).
During the Covid-19 pandemic, I offered some free online Maths and Geography coaching to local students, and I am pleased to report that parents and students found this useful, which resulted in increased grades.
My approach is that rote learning may work but a far better approach is that the student understands the topics of the subject.
Topic Expertise
I have worked, as an Examination Marker, Team Leader and Assistant Principal Examiner for GCSE Geography for over 30 years. This has given me a very useful insight into exactly what a question is asking and, more importantly, exactly what is required to achieve maximum marks! I have tutored students at both GCSE and A Level before.
Alongside my Geography and Geology teaching, I was also employed as a Maths teacher, for the last four years of my teaching career. I successfully taught classes of GCSE Maths and GCSE Statistics.
I retired early from teaching and took up an appointment as the Geography Editor at Teachit in Bath, in the west of England. Teachit Geography is an award winning website, publishing geography resources for teachers. Since then, I have tutored Maths at GCSE and Geography at GCE A Level.
