About Me

I worked for a year full time as an Undergraduate Maths Tutor at Edinburgh University (one of the very few non PhD students to hold such a position). This allowed me to work on my passions of teaching and pedagogy, and I loved empowering students of all abilities to overcome the difficult transition to University Maths. Welfare is as important to me as learning, and I embodied this in my approach.

I am passionate about mental health, and the focus of my career in recent years has been as a Senior Policy Adviser in the civil service, working in both the Ministry of Justice and Scottish Government, specialising in mental health policy. This has given me excellent communication skills, and an ability to tailor my communication needs to a variety of audience. I have also worked as Vice president Community at Edinburgh University students association, an elected full time position. this gave me real insight into higher education, such as entry processes, student support, and appraisal structure.

I love the subjects I tutor, and tutoring itself!

Tutor Experience

I began my tutoring career by working for Explore learning in Edinburgh, teaching Maths and English to groups of young students. this experience led me to hold private mathematics one to one sessions around my degree studies, to students aged 11-18, a job I undertook for many years. After graduating, this work culminated in an offer to join the University of Edinburgh's Mathematics department as an undergraduate tutor on degree courses, teaching students aged 18-22, and covering a wide range of topics, from honours algebra to proofs and problem solving.

My ethos is to tailor my approach to suit the needs of my students. Each student is different, and requires an empathetic and accessible approach to get the most out of learning. I try and work with the whole student in any session, not just the Mathematics or Philosophy that is the focus of the week. I always ensure students are leading their own learning, and that I am not spoon feeding answers, but providing sustainable understanding.

As well as professional work, I have regularly volunteered my teaching, for example as a maths 'pal' to 1st years during my degree studies, as a maths tutor on Edinburgh universities' outreach program, and as a debate leader in Wester Hailes for the charity 'Debate Mate', as well as for Action Tutoring in London.

I have worked at several international summer camps as a house parent and sports leader. this involved staying at a summer campus for teenage students, providing pastoral support as well as leading group sport activities.

As a result I have taught and worked with hundreds of different students of all ages, in a variety of setting, over the years, and will bring that experience to any session.
