I would say I have a wide and fairly eclectic range of interests. Once I graduated from university I found myself more and more pulled into a fascination with ancient history and the origins of civilization; I like to embrace the more philosophical side of life and am always looking to grow my knowledge and broaden my perspective. I find this pairs wonderfully with my background in languages; it is interesting to see the evolution of a language and to try to spot the connections between words from entirely different cultures. I try to keep up with Mandarin in my spare time, and continue to have French conversation classes with a teacher I met during my year abroad.
I really enjoy creative hobbies, such as listening to and playing music. I started learning guitar at a young age, and I’ve found the older I get, the more I enjoy playing it. Music has always been an important outlet for me, and I am always striving to improve, but allowing myself to play for the joy of it. On a similar note, cooking has become another one of my preferred creative outlets. I find the similarities between cooking and music to be quite profound, and when I’m considering trying to cook something new.
I appreciate the outdoors tremendously and I’m an avid gardener. It is my goal to be in a position where I don’t need to buy any fresh produce from the shops as I can grow it all at home. For now, I’m focused on learning and understanding what to do, and when.
When I’m not tutoring, I am growing my own coffee business, Imperial Jade, which specialises in single-origin specialty coffee from Yunnan, China. I have learnt a lot throughout this journey, and continue to do so.
Interview Preparation - 5 Years, UK boarding schools (Harrow, Tonbridge etc.).
I teach my students to respond confidently and naturally to the questions asked. I take time to get to know each student and work with them to ensure they remain true to their individual characters whilst answering the questions in a way that highlights their positive aspects.
ESL - 5 Years
I look to identify strengths and weaknesses quickly in order to determine the best approach towards helping students improve their linguistic capabilities. I also create my own lesson materials which are very well-received when put into practice.
English Comprehension - 4 Years
I love discussing various interpretations of texts and seeing how my students process and respond to the questions asked. I simplify the analysis process and ensure responses are concise and understandable.
Creative Writing - 4 Years
I guide my students towards coming up with their own ideas and fleshing out storylines themselves by asking a mixture of proactive and reactive questions. I have a lot of creative writing material that I made myself which has proven to be thoroughly effective for all ages - even 32 year olds!
11+ - 2 Years
My background in linguistics has given me a wide scope for processing language and spotting patterns, and I enjoy passing on that knowledge to 11+ prospective students. For me, it is not just a case of learning vocabulary, but understanding vocabulary as an expression of culture, history and root languages.
French - 1 Year
Although I’ve been doing French since the age of 5, I haven't been teaching French for as long as my other subjects. I am very passionate about language learning and I always endeavour to instil that same passion for learning a second language within my students.
