My name is Isaac, I grew up on the Canadian west coast, where I developed a lifelong appreciation for hiking, kayaking, and the outdoors in general. I am also an Oxford law graduate with nearly ten years of experience in the education sector. Outside of my work, I am deeply passionate about the arts, and particularly about music. I am an avid jazz guitar player, and I particularly enjoy learning about music from other parts of the world. I believe music is one of life’s great connecting forces, and it’s been my experience that I can find common ground with just about everyone through it.
I also have a deep curiosity about history and politics, which drove me to earn a first class degree in these subjects, and to gain practical experience working in government and academia. After completing my first degree I moved to Oxford to study law, before settling in London, where I enjoy exploring the city’s incredible music, food, and art scenes. Throughout this time, I have tutored politics, history and law, taught debate and public speaking, and helped students secure offers from their dream universities.
However, my own path to academic success was not straightforward. As someone with ADHD, I struggled during the early years of secondary school, and I know exactly how it feels to be left behind in class. I believe that my experience helps me to serve my students by making me a uniquely empathetic and supportive teacher. Furthermore, my passion and wide-ranging experience lends an engaging character to my lessons.
For the past four years, I have tutored law, politics, and history for A-Level and IB Students, and provided full-service admissions consulting for students applying to these subjects at university. I have considerable experience designing lesson plans intended to cover the core subject matter in these courses. Furthermore, I have particular expertise in helping students to refine their essay-writing technique so as to prepare for exams in these subjects. Having tutored exclusively online, I know how to use the teaching tools available in this format to create engaging lessons in spite of the limitations imposed by distance.
In my capacity as an admissions tutor, I provide everything from assistance with personal statements and test prep to interview practice. I have created a curriculum which prepares students for both the multiple choice and essay-based sections of the Law National Admissions Test, and have substantial experience preparing students for the History Admissions Test. Every year, I help multiple students achieve offers from Oxford and Cambridge.
Furthermore, recognising that students applying to study law often lack an academic background in the subject, I have designed a number of tutorial-style lessons which introduce students to classic legal topics, and help them to develop the skills essential for law students.
Finally, I have an exceptional record as a teacher of debate and public speaking. For the past 8 years, I have coached these activities, working with everyone from absolute beginners to some of the highest ranked school-aged debaters in the world. As part of each class, I lead a tutorial-style discussion on the day’s debate topic (typically something concerning philosophy, law, or politics). Consequently, I am accustomed to designing engaging and informative lessons, and adjusting them based on the needs of my students.
ADMISSIONS CONSULTING
As an admissions consultant, I support students through everything from standardised test-taking and personal statement drafting to interview prep. When providing advice on personal statements and interview prep, I am able to draw on my substantial experience with academic writing and my record as a champion debater. I have a proven record of helping students across the arts and social sciences achieve offers from Oxford, Cambridge, and other Russell Group universities.
TEST PREPARATION (LNAT, HAT)
I have nearly five years of experience preparing students for the Law National Admissions Test and the History Admissions Test. I am highly adept at teaching students to read strategically and helping them develop superb technique for answering multiple choice questions. All of my students have substantially improved their scores and essay-writing skills.
LAW
As a law tutor, I offer the subject at A Level, and lead sessions designed to introduce non-law students to the subject so as to prepare them for university applications. With a record as a champion debater and mooter, as well as experience working with students who speak English as a foreign language, I am adept at breaking complex legal concepts down in a straightforward, accessible manner.
HISTORY
I have several years of experience working with students studying history IGCSE and IB History. I support students by teaching general course content, providing support for IAs and Extended Essays, and preparing students to excel in their final examinations.
POLITICS
As the primary subject of my first degree, the study of politics is one of my great passions. I have experience providing IB and A Level students with teaching support, assistance with extended writing assignments, and exam preparation.
