Both my parents were scientists, which is why they met. My father was a professor of Biochemical Morphology. His interest in both chemistry and biology meant I had to study physics. Following my degree at Manchester University I decided I wanted to explore more astrophysics and studied interstellar winds for two years. After 25 years in the IT industry, I decided I wanted to go into teaching, completed a PGCE (distinction) and went into lecturing about my passion for the hard science - the underlying science of all things; physics.
I am presently pursuing an MSc in Astrophysics.
I have a keen interest in intellectual pursuits and enjoy chess and logic puzzles. This doesn't mean that I'm a geek, but I am; I have a family, two grown kids and a grandchild. Spending time with them is irreplaceable.
I enjoy cooking, reading and travelling. I had a plan to spend a year travelling across Europe seeing friends and new places in 2020... but... alas COVID hit. So, here I am. Let me help you!
I have been tutoring since 2008; initially face to face, but more recently only online. I am passionate about teaching, and I get a particular buzz seeing others enjoy physics. In particular when I see new concept hit home. I use a number of methods to develop independent learners, such as "flipped learning" and "dual coding".
My classroom experience has been in Greater Manchester, as well as a year in Kuwait in 2011/12.
As a fully qualified teacher with ALPs rating of 2 (1 is best, out of 9) I have a proven track record of working with students of all levels. I have a full toolbox of methods to help students learn. I appear to have an affinity with student who have Asperger's Syndrome.
As a teacher, I also have access to the "closed" information that the exam boards provide. I have, additionally, developed a large amount of my own materials that I provide, as needed, to my students.
All my students either gain two grades, or end up with 9s/A/a* ,or 7 in IB, grades.
All of A-level Physics and GCSE/iGCSE Physics, AP and IB.
As an 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙧 I am very thorough in how I help with exam technique.
I cover all the exam boards.
I have written a book in iGCSE and GCSE physics. It is available on Amazon - just search for John Scott, iGCSE and GCSE physics.
I take pride in being strong in teaching the tougher and more abstract topics, such as magnetism, field theory, particle physics, nuclear physics and relativity. I have developed numerous ways to teach other areas, such as waves and electricity.
John has helped me so much with understanding
Always very helpful and patient
Hi John, I was waiting to get my results today from my midterms. I’ve actually done well enough to pass my course for the year so I’m very pleased. Having said that, I don’t think I’ll be needing tuition anymore. I couldn’t have done it without the help so thank you very much, I really appreciate it!
Christina
Thank you for all your help, it truly improved my overall knowledge in physics and confidence for the exam.
… I have just finished physics. Overall I was pretty happy with how they went.
Mr Scott has a been a wonderfully enthusiastic tutor for AS physics this past year. At times when concepts were difficult to grasp, he patiently explained and re-explained, bringing in the history of theories and sharing many examples, until I understood. He was always flexible and willing to work with any material I gave him. It has been a delightful year with him, I would highly recommend Mr Scott to any students studying Physics at GCSE or A Level

Hi John I just wanted to inform you that paper 3 was really good for both of them. They are very positive and happy. They both give you a lot of greetings and thanks for everything and above all to learn them to love the subject. Thanks
Leo
Thank you John for everything over the past two years. You’ve been an amazing help
Rudhresh said that he was able to work with you on the difficulties with physics
I got to As on my recent tests did very well on my astro papers do thank you very much

Hey Jhon (sic), I just finished my physics examination yesterday, just wanted to say it went well, and i've answered every question, i think I missed only one subquestion in paper 2. Thank you again for helping with preparation!
Kind regards, Aleksandr
Sana
he likes you very much ... which is very very cool.
Year 9 student who really hated physics
Gayrathi
... He's starting to feel confident with physics now. Thank you for your support... He really enjoys your lessons
Hi John. Trust all is well. Rob got his predicted A* for Physics. Thank you for everything. Will be in touch. F

Just wanted to let you know that Renee passed the IB Diploma. Despite all the issues she made it. The only reasons he passed is because of all her tutors supporting her. So Thankyou
The girls thank you for the amazing year and their 2nd paper went very well

We can wholeheartedly recommend John for a level physics tuition. We’ve seen a significant difference in our daughters confidence since working with John and we feel she will now stand a very good chance of getting the grades she capable of in the recent exams. He is incredibly knowledgable, engaging and thorough. We felt fortunate to be able to work with John given his role with examining boards, and the up to date knowledge this brings.
Thank you John- Claudia has really appreciated and enjoyed working with you!
thank you for helping me with my physics over the last year, John has an incredible understanding of the subjects and was able to teach them to me in a way that I thoroughly understood and enjoyed. He greatly helped me with my A2 physics and has helped to improve my grades for the subject. - Rhys
I have really enjoyed working with you this year. Thank you so much. In this last lesson we covered the gamma factor in special relativity. That really helped me understand how it all works. Thank you so much again. I'll let you know how it all went on paper 3 tomorrow. Claudia
"Thank you for all your lessons as they have been very helpful ::smile::"
- Hannah
You where great, you may hear from her again once we get results. She enjoyed working with you.
Sharon about her daughter.
Thank you very much. Angel’s confidence is increasing and her subject knowledge is incredible- Thank you.
Thanks for the classes till now. I have to say that the girls are doing extremely well for physics and we lately had a parent meeting and the teachers were astonished of the jump the girls made since September. They just understand much much more than before your classes. I wanted to thank you for the way you teach them and hope they will keep this level up till end of A levels as they both signed in for their subject options for next year. In their last exams M got a grade 9 and K a grade 8. Their tests are also amazing, all above the 85%.
So we are happy that we have you as their teacher and that you made a significant difference in the subject.
Thanks again
Karima
Hi John. Thanks so much for the lesson of today. The girls were so happy because you explained the subject so well, they said.
John has an excellent understanding of even the most complex topics and is capable of relating them to students in a way they can enjoy, both in small group settings or with larger class sizes. - Mick
“No doubt you are the best teacher I have found in my life, returning back to study after two years, I haven't found any difficulties in my (university) studies because my concepts are very cleared and it all due to your efforts.” - Anna
