Genetics PhD

Experienced Life Sciences teacher and lecturer. I completed my undergraduate studies, then I earned a master’s degree in Immunological and Biochemical Engineering (I was ranked top of my class). Subsequently, I was awarded an international fellowship that allowed me to pursue my PhD studies in Spain, where I obtained a PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics and Cell Biology in 2012. After my PhD, I worked at the University of Copenhagen as a Postdoctoral Fellow for two years in the field of Population Genetics. Then, I joined UMV, as a Lecturer from 2014 to 2017, before joining Imperial College London as a lecturer in 2017.

I monitor students’ understanding and progress towards the achievement of learning outcomes. My startegy is based on active learning which encompasses and promotes various techniques and activities that can be used to actively involve the student in the learning process. I am constantly thinking about what the student knows, what they want to know, what they need to be able to do, what behaviours I hope they’ll be demonstrating and I think that that’s really important. My teaching is very based on a very student centered approach, it relies on the three domains of learning: Knowledge, Skills and Attitude. I am very familiar with flipped classroom material, that would help to achieve the learning outcomes for an active and interactive learning.

Tutor Experience

I have been fortunate to start teaching since my early career in 2008, when I used to co-supervise master students and deliver postgraduate teaching that helped me to acquire a strong interpersonal, pedagogical and communication skills. Over the course of my professional path, I have become increasingly involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. I was involved in the co-organisation and acting as co-lead in the MSc of Medical Biotechnology in the Faculty of Medicine, as on-site liaison and facilitator between the program elements and the target community. I was delighted to discover and include the e-learning approach and tools to my teaching since 2014, where I learnt to be thoughtful about my teaching objectives and my teaching plan, as well as developing some time management and digital teaching approaches to tailor my lecture course to an online environment.

I have been involved in the teaching in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College. I have been lecturing in MSc of Molecular Medicine, MSc Immunology and assisting in module-1 of the BSc Neuroscience & Mental Health (N&MH) in the Department of Brain Sciences, by helping with the lab practical teaching, which has further contributed to the development of my teaching skills. Moreover, I was very helpful in assisting with the marking of exam scripts in the previous structure of the BSc N&MH. Additionally, I have completed various courses organised by the Learning and Development Centre at Imperial such as the workshop for supervising research students which allowed me to be recognised as a supervisor for PhD and research students.
