About Me
I have been teaching Psychology for more than 25 years, most recently teaching IB Psychology (and TOK) at some of the highest performing schools in the world in Singapore (UWCSEA, SJII). I love teaching Psychology, especially seeing the connections students can make between what they are learning and their own lives, usually from the very first lesson! This real world application is the jewel in the crown of Psychology, so finding ways to bring topics to life with real world examples is an important part of learning.
A key focus for me is to help students feel confident in their ability to improve. This helps to maintain motivation which in turn leads to steady progress towards the grades they are aiming for. One way I do this is to help students see that they can apply a consistent way of doing things to get from 'things I know and understand' to 'what I need to get all the marks'. Working with the IB in a variety of roles connected to exams has given me a deep understanding of what students need to do so that they can translate their knowledge into marks.
Away from the classroom I have always been a keen athlete and I still cycle regularly, ski whenever I can and always enjoy watching rugby union now that my playing days are in the past. I like to read, travel and think about the big events happening in the world from a Psychological point of view. All of these activities and interests provide fertile ground for examples in our sessions. For example, how exactly do political organisations seek to influence decision making by voters? Do these strategies work? Is this ethical? How could students apply the same understanding to make meaningful and positive changes in their own communities?

Topic Expertise
My academic background is centred in the biological approach to psychology and this is often useful as students can feel daunted by the technical terms involved in processes such as neurotransmission and neuroplasticity.
More recently, I have developed a particular interest in Cognitive Psychology as it is applied in all areas of performance (sport, academics, consumer behaviour etc)
I am also confident teaching Research Methods and Statistics, helping students to produce very high quality Psychology IAs as well as deep, rich engagement with core concepts including bias, measurement, responsibility, change and causality. This expertise helps students prepare for questions focused on these concepts in the new Psychology curriculum.
For TOK, I have developed a tried and trusted process to help students produce high quality Exhibitions with a minimum of time, effort and anxiety, and no need to reach for AI or other tools!
