My musical journey began later than many musicians, when I started learning viola at the age of 11, and piano a year later aged 12 (after convincing the school teacher to tell my parents it could help me progress more quickly with viola!). As a teacher, I now understand the challenges of learning an instrument and developing musical understanding both as a learner and a teacher. This has shaped the way I teach, and I am passionate about providing the kind of learning experience I would have valued myself.
Music has always been a passion of mine. I am fascinated not only by composition, but also by listening to music in depth, exploring the ideas behind it, and understanding what makes a piece work. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is helping students move beyond simply memorising information, and instead building the confidence to think independently and engage with music on a deeper level. This is central to my teaching philosophy. Whether a student is preparing for GCSE or A-Level exams, developing composition skills, studying at university, or simply wanting to improve, my aim is to provide them with the understanding and tools they need to continue progressing confidently on their own.
I am a calm, patient, and approachable tutor, whilst remaining realistic and helping students set meaningful goals. Building a strong rapport with students is an important part of my teaching: understanding and valuing each student as an individual helps create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their skills.
Outside of music, I enjoy travelling, walking, visiting family in Switzerland, and learning languages. I am currently learning German and previously studied Russian. I also share my home with three cats, who you’ll probably only ever see when dinner time is approaching!
Private Music Tutor
I have over 15 years’ experience as a private music tutor, teaching students from beginner level through to diploma and university level. I specialise in GCSE, A-Level, and university tuition, including music theory, composition, analysis, music history, academic writing, and examination preparation.
I have extensive experience supporting students with university-level work, including essay skills, critical analysis, composition projects, and preparation for degree-level study. I have particular experience with the WJEC and Pearson Edexcel specifications, helping students develop both their subject knowledge and their ability to apply it effectively within assessments. I am also comfortable preparing students across different exam boards, researching individual specifications and assessment criteria to ensure lessons are tailored to each student’s requirements.
A key part of my teaching is helping students understand examiner expectations and what separates a good answer from an excellent one. I help students develop examination strategies, essay structure, analytical approaches, and techniques for communicating ideas clearly in order to achieve their strongest possible results.
Over the years, I have taught a wide range of learners, including students with additional learning needs. My instrumental students have achieved a 100% examination pass rate, with approximately 80% achieving Merit or Distinction results.

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama
I taught musicianship and music theory, creating lesson plans, schedules, and resources while providing individual feedback to students. I also led creative composition activities, including a Eurovision-style composition project.
