Hello, I’m Mehmet (you can also call me Cham if it is easier). I hold a PhD in Mathematics and have completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the United States. As a passionate mathematician, I delight in sharing the joys of mathematics with others. At the age of fourteen I started teaching my three-year old sister mathematics; since then, I have taught many individuals, small groups, and classes, both professionally and casually.
Besides maths...:
I am a gymnast: I have competed in national competitions, and have taught classes of children activities such as handstands, splits, and backflips.
I enjoy cycling: my wife and I bicycled 6,000km around Turkey, Georgia, and Armenia; I bicycled 2,500km around California.
I play baglama and kabak kemane (traditional Anatolian musical instruments).
I have been tutoring students since 2002. Some of my students are professors now!
My teaching history includes working at Tepebaşı Belediyesi Matematik Evi (Mathematics House), teaching secondary-school students. At this Mathematics House, the other teachers and I co-ordinated as a team in planning lessons for shared classes. In order to keep my students engaged for the full 90 minutes, I varied activities throughout each lesson. Throughout my lessons, I used thought-provoking questions to guide students to investigate and prove things for themselves. Sometimes my students worked in small groups: working with friends and peers creates a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, which helps students to absorb information and boosts the classroom dynamics. Furthermore, I used physical objects such as polygons, origami, and wooden cubes to aid understanding. I provided frequent feedback to students individually in order to allow students to continue learning material correctly.
I also have experience teaching in schools and lecturing at universities.
My enthusiasm for teaching mathematics extends beyond traditional classroom walls. Since 2009 I have taught courses at Nesin Matematik Köyü, a Mathematics Village in İzmir, Turkey. Here, as well as teaching mathematics, I cleaned, gardened, performed other daily chores, and made day-trips to local areas together with my students. I remain a part of this vibrant community and continue to teach courses. Similarly, I helped my PhD supervisor fulfill his dream of founding another Mathematics Village, Çakılarası Matematik Köyü, in Eskişehir, Turkey. Three friends and I carried stones and built classrooms and sleeping rooms.
Hyperconvex Spaces, Tight Span of a Metric Space, Injective Metric Spaces, Geodesic Spaces, Metric Trees.
