Hello, Jodie here! The University of Cambridge (Christ's College) has been my home off-and-on for the last twelve years - I completed all of my Higher Education degrees there, studying a range of topics including English Literature, Theatre, Media, Philosophy, Sociology, and Education.
My doctoral thesis 'Oh, What a Novelty! The Paradoxical Pop-Up Book' is an interdisciplinary study of children's culture and media, exploring where the pop-up book surfaces across non-book media: in animated film, puppetry, advertising, video games, museum exhibitions, and even Virtual Reality!
My teaching style is enthusiastic, supportive, and thought-provoking. Expect fun tasks, energetic discussions, and lesson objectives that are tailored to your specific needs. I will meet you at your level will to enrich your studies however I can.
I was employed as a Supervisor at the University of Cambridge for the undergraduate Education Tripos (English, Drama, and the Arts) for three years. This role included 178+ hours of one-on-one supervision, and involved guiding students' projects, providing detailed written feedback for coursework, facilitating academic discussion of set texts and key ideas, and tracking student progress.
I supervised on seven 'Part II' (Finals) Units:
Education Dissertation ‖ Children’s Literature ‖ Shakespeare ‖
Performance, Education, and Society ‖ Play, Creativities and Imagination ‖ Changing Landscapes of Childhood and Youth (History) ‖ Literature and Culture
And on two 'Part I' (First and Second Year Undergraduate) Units:
Poetics, Aesthetics and Criticism ‖ Introduction to Education
I was also an English and Drama teacher at a secondary school on the Isle of Wight where I achieved a PGCE. I independently taught both English and Drama to students in Year 7, Year 8, & Year 9, and a Year 10 English GCSE additional support class, and an Upper Sixth Theatre Studies class. I led Oxbridge mock-interviews and personal statement workshops for Sixth Form students.
In London, I worked as a private tutor, designing and delivering in-person creative writing sessions, verbal reasoning, and reading comprehension, for young students working towards 11+ and school entrance exams.
I am a confident public speaker/ lecturer and have presented my academic research on children’s literature, media, and culture at fourteen international conferences at various institutes such as the University of Malta, University of Warwick, University of Montenegro, University of Salamanca, and Yale University.
Set texts (Humanities, English Lit, Theatre Studies, History, Philosophy) - I would be eager to read any text that you are working on to in order to fully support your studies.
Humanities essay-writing support (all levels) - Structuring, primary source/textual analysis, using secondary sources (and referencing), creating a strong argument, crafting a punchy introduction and satisfying conclusion, and so on.
Coursework - From EPQs to undergraduate dissertations, I can guide you through your project from initial idea to final, polished piece. I can tutor on different methodologies, data collection, ethical considerations, and the write-up.
'Unseen' Texts - With my supervisees at Cambridge, I often would bring an 'unseen' text (a poem, an object, a piece of music, a painting) to the session as inspiration to answer a practice exam question. This exercise boosts confidence, analytical skills, and develops your academic voice.
Oxbridge/ UCAS applications - As a successful Cambridge applicant who later worked for two years as an intake interviewer for Christ's College (2022 and 2023), I have seen the interview process from both sides. I can facilitate Oxbridge mock-interviews or help you prepare a strong personal statement for any application.
Subject specialisms:
Shakespeare! I have enjoyed teaching classes on (and acting in/ directing) nearly all of Shakespeare's plays.
Children's Literature and Youth Media! Are you studying YA texts, picturebooks, the 'classics', video games, toys, animated films & TV, or playspaces? This is my specialism!
Education! I have a strong broad-brush grasp on the Philosophy, Sociology, History, and Psychology of Education.
Theories of Play and Performance! I have guided students through many 'creative' academic projects - from reimagining Shakespearean passages as Minecraft landscapes, to making puppets that explore identity construction. If you are working on more unusual or whimsical project and need support, let me know!
