I moved to Japan in 2017 as an Assistant Language Teacher of English through the JET Programme, having no idea what to do with myself after university, and fell in love with the Japanese language. I taught myself Japanese from scratch and lots of trial and error, but it led me up to successfully passing the JLPT N2.
After living in Niigata for five years, I obtained my teaching certification in the UK and began working at a world-renowned grammar school. Now I teach Japanese to GCSE and IB diploma students, and have also taught Theory of Knowledge for several years.
My hobbies include video games, weightlifting, playing the drums and hiking. I also do Japanese flower arranging occasionally! I love nature, and my favourite birdsong is the Japanese bush warbler's.
JAPANESE:
I have 6 Japanese classes from ages 11-17 of up to 32 students each. I see each of my classes 3 times a week, and I also run an extracurricular lesson once a week for my Year 9s who are currently studying to take the Kanji Kentei Level 10 examination.
We are an IB school, so I have years of experience teaching within the Middle Years Programme and IB Diploma curriculum.
I have conducted and moderated speaking exams for GCSE and IB for a few years now, and am very familiar with what examiners are looking for in top scoring students.
I have provided support sessions to students of all ages to support them with their character learning, GCSE content and IB speaking practice.
THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE:
I have taught 3 classes the Theory of Knowledge course so far, including guiding students through the exhibition and essay.
I have received professional development training on marking each assignment and am very familiar with what examiners are looking for in top-scoring TOK essays.
I have created my own resources for my students to help develop their critical thinking skills. My current Year 12 class likes to run their own debates based on the Area of Knowledge that we are currently studying!
My taught classes have improved by an average of 4 marks from writing their first draft to handing in their final essay submission.
My place of work performs consistently half a point higher than the international average for their combined points score of EE and TOK. We have on average 10% more students attaining 3 points compared with the international average.

I have supervised 4 students in completing their Interdisciplinary Extended Essays.
