I am an experienced chemistry tutor aiming to demystify chemistry so that you can love the subject as much as I do. Chemistry does not have to be a challenge if taught well! I particularly enjoy organic chemistry, especially compounds that are able to emit light (they glow!)
My underpinning teaching style focuses on creating a strong foundation of the basic principles that govern how atoms and molecules behave so that more complex topics (e.g., reactivity and organic chemistry) are easier to understand. I work systematically, breaking topics down into smaller and easy to digest components and believe that the key to performing well during exams is practise, practise, practise! I don’t want you to be reliant on remembering content from your notes or a textbook, instead I want you to be able to use your understanding of first principles to work through a problem.
University Level Teaching:
Hosted revision sessions for first year undergraduates (15-20 per students session) focussing on organic chemistry (including mechanisms and intermolecular interactions), thermodynamics, inorganic and organometallic chemistry and physical chemistry
Trained and employed as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) at The University of York where I focussed most of my attention towards demonstrating key laboratory skills and practises to undergraduate students (with some lab script marking experience too).
Primary Mentor for final year BSc project student (research and literature review focussed). I supported their achievement of a 1st class project report.
Volunteer and Tutoring Experience:
Volunteer at Park Groves Primary School (Sept 2018) through the York Students in Schools programme, teaching Year 4 students
Tutoring (in a voluntary capacity) underprivileged and underperforming students during the Covid-19 Pandemic (Jun 2020) both in Nairobi, Kenya and London, UK joining the Learning Lab and Homework Club (Teaching Chemistry HL/SL (IB) and A-Level curricula)
I teach high school level curricula including GCSE, A-Levels (all exam boards) and the International Baccalaureate (IB).
Organic Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, Dissertation/Thesis Writing, Undergraduate Laboratory Skills, Basic Maths
