I am new to the Spires platform, coming from a background of studying and teaching at Cambridge University. I use examples and simple language to explain complex ideas, and aim to pass on my enthusiasm for my subject. Outside of academic interests, I am interested in martial arts, chess, and meditation. As a teenager, I was an undefeated national champion in gaming.
I am new to Spires, coming from a background of teaching and studying at the University of Cambridge.
I am currently employed by Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, as the Philosophy Supervisor for the Higher Aspirations Scheme. Prior to that I was employed by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, as the Philosophy Supervisor for their Bridging School. Prior still, I taught and marked for the undergraduate Logic course at Cambridge and was Marker in Philosophy for the prestigious John Locke Essay Competition.
Outside of University teaching, I have an estimated 500 hours of experience privately tutoring undergraduates and A-level students, as well as Oxbridge admissions. I have also tutored over 30 students for the John Locke Essay Competition.
My private sessions emulate the Cambridge supervision: sustained, interactive philosophical discussion, with substantial student input, imparts the prized academic skills of independent thought and clear communication. But most of all, I aim to make learning interesting.
I teach all areas of Philosophy found at A Level and most undergraduate Analytic Philosophy courses.
My areas of particular expertise are the Philosophy of Religion, Metaphysics, the History of Philosophy, and Logic.
Moreover, I have particular expertise in Oxbridge admissions: I am currently employed by Cambridge in a role that involves me advising applicants who are part of college outreach schemes.
Mr. Karim is an exceptional tutor in philosophy and theology. I really really benefited a lot from tutoring sessions! From his tutoring sessions, I learned many essential skills that would benefit me for a life long time, including skills of constructing solid and logical arguments, critical thinking, and academic writing. In addition to this, I enjoyed the tutoring sessions very much! Mr. Karim has introduced a lot of interesting topics in philosophy and theology, and has provided extremely useful reading materials which help me with in-depth learning and I can cite from them since they are academic and straight to the point. He has a true talent to make challenging subjects not only understandable but also engaging and thought-provoking! Each session feels like a journey of discovery, where Mr. Karim not only introduces concepts but also encourages me to explore different perspectives and develop my own insights. During our sessions, when discussing about essay topics, Mr. Karim often uses the "socrates method of questioning", guiding me toward discovering different aspects of knowledge myself, which deepens my understanding to the topic. I am very grateful to have Mr. Karim as my tutor! It is a pleasure and honour to have a tutor like him in the journey of learning!

Karim was genuinely one of the best tutors I had. He is extremely knowledgeable, very familiar with the exam board, and provided really clear and detailed feedback on all my essays and written work, more than my teachers at school ever did. He always made sure that I understood what he was talking about and whenever I was confused about something, he covered it in comprehensive detail and supplemented it with notes so that I had something to refer to and reflect upon after the lesson. He’s really friendly and easy to communicate with. I appreciate all of his help and have learnt so much in the couple of months he tutored me for. I would definitely recommend him to anyone else taking the philosophy A level!!

Karim was extremely helpful as a tutor for my examination prep for first-year. I needed teaching and clarification of core concepts in metaphysics, modern philosophy and epistemology. We had twelve sessions with Karim reviewing essays, guiding me through primary readings and discussing ideas from each topic. For the topics covered with Karim I went to the exam feeling completely prepared and far more confident than for those that were not covered with him. I would really recommend Karim as a tutor he was so clear in his explanations and very obliging with any extra readings or essays that had to be looked at.

To whom it may concern,
Please accept this letter as certification of Karim Shoaib’s role as a Cambridge Higher Aspirations
Scheme (CHAS) supervisor for Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge between November 2023 and
March 2024.
CHAS was launched in November 2020 in collaboration with Norfolk County Council as a scheme to
raise attainment and increase progression to top universities for 150 Year 12 students across Norfolk.
Its success led to its expansion beyond Norfolk in 2022, this year encompassing over 300 students
from all of the College’s link areas (Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and seven boroughs of London). As part of
the scheme, participating students receive online subject-specific supervisions (small-group
seminars) run by Cambridge postgraduates and academics, information and guidance from the
Gonville and Caius Admissions team, and the opportunity to visit the College. The supervisions cover
subjects the students hope to go on to study at University.
Karim was the Philosophy supervisor for the programme. He planned sessions to engage and challenge the
year 12s, increasing their confidence in the subject area and preparing them to make an application
to top universities. Throughout the programme, Karim demonstrated thorough adherence to
safeguarding best practice and effective communication with both students and College staff. He was
well-prepared for all supervisions, sharing with us information on the structure and content of his
sessions well in time of the start date. During the sessions, Karim led many group discussions,
ensuring that everyone’s voice was heard, creating an open atmosphere where students felt
confident to contribute and ask questions. In all, Karim proved to be organised, friendly, and
commited to his role.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Karim for posts of a similar nature.
If you have any further questions about Karim’s employment with us, please do not hesitate to get in
touch.
Best wishes,
Mathew
