About Me

Following my desire to evolve my music skills, I have studied and taught music in schools, conservatories, and universities, both in Greece and the UK, which required large amounts of energy and commitment to my professional self-development as I often had to leave behind a familiar place and adjust quickly to a new environment. On the other hand, this was very rewarding as I worked with a variety of artists and musicians who helped me build a rich network of reputable music professionals and educators from different countries and cultures.

My compositional works have been performed by the Ligeti Quartet, Red Note Ensemble, the Quasar Ensemble, Edinburgh University's string orchestra, Apartment House Ensemble, Nephele Ensemble, Piano Duo Biondi & Brunialti, the Professor of Artistic Doctoral Studies at the Sibelius Academy & violinist Mieko Kanno, the Director of Performance at Brunel University & jazz saxophonist Frank Griffith, and the flautist Georgia Cooke.

I have also collaborated as a piano & keyboard player with several ensembles and artists in Corfu, Athens, and London, such as the jazz ensemble Jazz Bridge, the music improvisation workshop ensemble New Noise, the Egyptian ensemble Nass Makan, the Greek Ethno/Jazz group Ghost Notes, and the singers/songwriters Kate Thomas, Niall Mac Namee, and Michalis Emirlis.

Currently, I am working on the research project "The Use of Space in the Performance of Live Instrumental Music" as part of my PhD studies at the music department of Sheffield University.

Tutor Experience

My teaching experience includes piano & guitar tuition at primary schools, music curriculum teaching KS3 - 5 at secondary schools, as well as university teaching, focused primarily on music theory & composition.

This experience allowed me to view the national curriculum from different perspectives. Specifically in music, I realised that even though students need to gain theoretical knowledge, it is equally essential to be able to express themselves by developing their creativity. For that reason, I tried to emphasise the practical aspect of music by creating musical games and group activities so that the students could realise the need/purpose behind every "theoretical rule" while using their imagination.

In addition, I experienced first-hand some of the difficulties that young people can encounter during their studies, such as boredom, low self-esteem, disappointment, fear of failure and even anxiety. So, apart from teaching the curriculum subjects, my role also included motivating the pupils and keeping the levels of their enthusiasm and self-esteem high by giving precise and brief instructions, preparing tasks suitable for their abilities, creating fun targets, and providing rewards, having one-to-one talks about what they enjoy or find it challenging to do, as well as praising teamwork and individual's efforts.

Topic Expertise

Music Theory - Music theory lessons can be focused on the classical or jazz route or a combination. All options start with the fundamentals of music theory and then focus on the relevant music style. The classical path will focus on classical harmony and counterpoint, while the jazz pathway will mainly concentrate on jazz theory and harmony.

Composition - Composition lessons can be focused on notation, music production, or a combination. All paths aim at the development and extension of your musical ideas. The notation route will focus on creating scores to a professional standard so your musical ideas can be performed live. This path also includes orchestration lessons. The music production route will focus on using music software to record and edit your musical ideas.

Piano - Piano Lessons can be focused either on the classical or jazz route or a combination. The classical pathway will focus on learning to read and perform fully notated pieces/songs on the piano. The jazz route will focus on improvisation and harmonising on the piano scores, which contain only the melody and the chords.

Academic Support - Academic support includes customised lessons tailored to individual student's educational needs. For secondary students, emphasis will be given to the GCSE or A-Level music curriculum. These lessons also include guidance with university applications. University students will receive support for their undergraduate or postgraduate music courses and assignments. Advice with Master's or PhD applications will be available if needed.
