I’m Laurence. I attended the University of Oxford between 2010 and 2018, completing an undergraduate masters of mathematics (MMath) and a doctorate in mathematical biology (DPhil, PhD). I have 5+ years experience of tutoring the UK mathematics syllabus.
I’ve greatly enjoyed mathematics from an early age. On a personal level, I have found that studying mathematics has helped me appreciate the beauty of the universe - hence my specialism into applied mathematics. Studying quantum theory, special relativity and mathematical biology fundamentally changed the way I look at the world around me. I love bringing other elements of science into my lessons, helping to broaden my student’s perspective on the world, and also demonstrating how maths can open doors to incredible new ideas.
I’m also qualified in social work, with 4 years+ of specialist experience working with children who have experienced trauma. Due to this, I am also experienced in working with children with complex SEND needs or neurodevelopmental conditions, such as autism and ADHD.
Through my time in social work, I have learnt how to support a wide range of young people, with empathy and care. This, together with my deep knowledge of mathematics, I can help children reach their goals. Whether they just need some extra help to achieve the highest grades, or if they need additional support tailored to their needs, I am here to help.
I am fully DBS checked and safeguarding trained, committed to ensuring the welfare of your child.
I have tutored at several Oxford independent schools alongside privately tutoring many students. I cover secondary school Mathematics, teaching students from the 11 up to the age of 18, covering everything from year 7 Mathematics to Further Mathematics A-Level. I am most experienced in tutoring Mathematics/Further Mathematics A-Level, GCSE and IGCSE.
Most students seek me out as they have found themselves struggling greatly in school. In my experience, standard education does not allow teachers to give the kind of care and guidance 1-1 tuition does. Personal tuition is uniquely suited to help students get back on track, by identifying gaps in knowledge and understanding.
I have helped many students who have felt very demoralised about mathematics, gain real confidence in their ability. I have shown them that they are capable of answering questions with ease where they previously had thought it completely beyond them. This is an exceedingly rewarding experience and I find real pleasure in seeing my students succeed.
In addition, students also come to me to learn new material. I have tutored many students through entire A-Level modules, taking them from zero knowledge to achieving top marks on exam papers. So whatever your need is, I can help you - any questions please feel free to get in touch.
I specialise in the UK mathematics syllabus, up to university level. I primarily tutor GCSE and A-Level, however I am fully capable of teaching below this level. I am experienced with UK exam boards, however I can tailor my tuition to your needs. I am also happy to tutor adults as well as children, and have experience tutoring adult learners.
In my Undergraduate Masters Mathematics course at The University of Oxford, I specialised in Applied Mathematics - studying topics such as quantum theory, quantum computing, special relativity, fluid/solid mechanics, and biomathematics.
I completed my DPhil (PhD) in the field of Mathematical Biology. I researched mathematical models of the human eye, simulating the distribution and interaction of injected drugs. Over the 4 years of my research I published three papers in well-respected academic journals.
Another great lesson!
Another brilliant lesson!
Laurence taught me new methods that made it easy for me to understand the concepts. I feel more confident in being able to solve similar problems in my Further Maths IGCSE paper.
Excellent tutor. Highly qualified in academia and teaching.
Very helpful and enjoyed it thanks
Excellent Lawrence was very helpful thank you
Laurence was very patient and thorough. He went well above and beyond to ensure I received the highest quality lesson possible.
Excellent first session, thank you Laurence

great lesson was very productive and I learnt loads
“Laurence is a great Maths tutor - he explains solutions in a very clear and concise way to make them easy to understand and sets a formula to help solve similar problems. We worked through questions until he was certain I 100% understood them and why the solution worked. I saw him leading up to my A levels and would not have done half as well as I did without his help!”
Martha - A-Level Maths
“Laurence is a genial teacher who has transformed our 12 year old’s appreciation of Maths. By listening to what’s on his mind, then approaching the highest level work in a simple structured way, he’s made it a thrill not a chore - and top marks too. Very highly recommended.”
Father of Thomas - Secondary school entrance exam preparation
“As someone who was self taught A-level maths I looked for a tutor and came across Laurence. Without him I wouldn’t have achieved the incredibly high marks I did in my A-levels let alone attend university to further study in Dentistry. He provided a basic understanding of complex concepts, as well as constant help no matter where I was in the world. He helped me gain confidence in my work and understanding, was very accommodating and friendly and I wouldn’t have achieved my academic position today without him. Thank You!”
Beth - A-Level Maths
“Laurence was a brilliant tutor. He could explain everything I needed to know, and was really helpful. He really boosted my confidence in maths and I’d highly recommend him.”
Lizzie - GCSE Maths
“Laurence is an excellent tutor. He helped my daughter gain confidence and in her words, 'helped me to understand the concepts behind mathematical principles.’ She benefited enormously from his accessible and supportive approach.”
Mother of Anna - GCSE Maths
“Thank you for teaching me. I feel very good about our lessons. With your help, I can figure out most questions independently and I can get inspiration from lessons which improve my mathematical thinking.”
Evelyn - A-Level Maths
