Bath, in the historic county of Somerset, southwestern England. Bath is situated on the banks of the River Avon (Lower, or Bristol, Avon) in a natural arena of high hills. It was constructed of local limestone and is one of the most beautiful and aesthetically distinguished cities in the United Kingdom. The late Perpendicular Gothic abbey church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in the 16th century, is notable for its windows. Bath’s richness of classical Georgian architecture distinguishes it from almost all other cities in the United Kingdom, and in 1987, the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city is, of course, world-famous for hot springs that drew the Romans who established Bath as Aquae Sulis, dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, a hybrid of Celtic (Sul) and Roman (Minerva) deities. The Saxons constructed an abbey on the location where Edgar was crowned the first king of England in the years around 973 CE. The Normans rebuilt the church between the years 1088 and 1122, transferring the diocese they had established at Wells to Bath. In 1206, the bishop’s throne was returned to Wells, and there was a protracted struggle between the Wells canons and the Bath monks, of which the bishop was titular abbot. Bath and Wells is still the name of the diocese. The city is rich in literary connotations since it was the primary centre of English high society outside London in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Tobias Smollett’s writings and Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s plays show life at the time in graphic detail. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (both 1817) by Jane Austen depict the fashionable life of Bath around 1800 with gentle satire and strong vision. Bath Olivers (biscuits named after William Oliver, an accomplished physician who founded what is now the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases), Bath buns, Bath bricks, and Bath (invalid) chairs are all names derived from the city.
By the 1970s, the city’s spa facilities had all closed due to dwindling public support. However, with increasing interest in spa culture, and increasing international tourism to the area, Thermae Bath Spa opened (2006) near the hot springs in a distinctive building, the development of which also included the restoration of five historic buildings in the city’s old spa area.
Tourism contributes significantly to the local economy. While not predominantly a manufacturing centre, Bath has significant publishing and light engineering sectors. Population of 94,782 (2011).
