How an expert online tutor in Bromley can help you

Bromley is an outer borough of London, England, located on the city’s southeastern outskirts. The majority of the borough is historically part of Kent, while its westernmost extensions are traditionally part of Surrey. Bromley is the most populous of the London boroughs. Bromley was formed in 1965 by the merger of the old boroughs of Beckenham and Bromley and the urban districts of Orpington, Penge, and parts of Chislehurst and Sidcup in Kent. Mottingham, Sydenham (in part), Elmstead, Penge, Anerley, Chislehurst, Beckenham, Bromley, Elmers End, Shortlands, St. Paul’s Cray, Bickley, Petts Wood, Southborough, St. Mary Cray, Kevingtown, Orpington, Hayes, West Wickham, Locksbottom, Keston, Farnborough, Chelsfield, Green Street Green, Pratt’s Bottom, Leaves

The village of Bromley received its first charter in 862 CE. The bishops of Rochester have been lords of the manor from ancient times; from Norman times until 1845, they lived at Bromley Palace, which was replaced by a new structure in 1775 and today houses a civic centre, the town hall. King John gave the charter to host a Tuesday market in 1205. The market day was moved to Thursday in 1477, and two annual fairs were formed. Even though the fairs were stopped in 1865, a market is still maintained.

The Bromley Museum is housed in the monastery at Orpington, which dates from 1270. The Bromley parish church was destroyed by German bombing during the Battle of Britain in 1941, but it was later repaired and preserved in its mediaeval tower. Crofton Roman villa, which was inhabited from 140 to 400 CE, is nearby. Wickham Court, built in the Tudor style, is another noteworthy edifice. Bromley College, a charitable organisation, created in 1666 to offer a home for widows of Anglican clergy, is housed in a cloistered redbrick construction with wrought-iron gates. Camden Place, erected in 1609, was the exiled Napoleon III’s and Empress Eugénie’s house. On Chislehurst Common, a monument cross honours their son, Louis Bonaparte, killed in the Zulu War (1879). Hayes Place (demolished in 1934) was home to William Pitt, the Elder, and William Pitt, the Younger, was born there in 1759. Charles Darwin lived in Down House (now a museum) in the village of Downe from 1842 until his death, where he authored the seminal On the Origin of Species. H.G. Wells, the author, was born in Bromley in 1866.

The Crystal Palace stood in the borough’s far northwestern section. It was built of glass and iron for the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Hyde Park (in Westminster), then it was reerected on Sydenham Hill in 1852–54, overlooking London from the south. The Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936, but the grounds (Crystal Palace Park) currently house a sports and entertainment centre and a music bowl, both of which opened in 1964.

Chislehurst is famous for its “caves,” which are 18th- and 19th-century chalk mines supposed to date back to Roman times. During World War II, they served as air-raid shelters.

What can you tell me about Bromley?

Bromley, in the historic county of Somerset, southwestern England. Bromley is situated on the banks of the River Avon (Lower, or Bristol, Avon) in a natural arena of high hills. It was constructed of local limestone and is one of the most beautiful and aesthetically distinguished cities in the United Kingdom. The late Perpendicular Gothic abbey church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in the 16th century, is notable for its windows. Bromley’s richness of classical Georgian architecture distinguishes it from almost all otehr cities in the United Kingdom, and in 1987, the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city is, of course, world-famous for hot springs that drew the Romans who established Bromley as Aquae Sulis, dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, a hybrid of Celtic (Sul) and Roman (Minerva) deities. The Saxons constructed an abbey on the location where Edgar was crowned the first king of England in 973 CE. The Normans rebuilt the church between 1088 and 1122, transferring the diocese they had established at Wells to Bromley. In 1206, the bishop’s throne was returned to Wells, and there was a protracted struggle between the Wells canons and the Bromley monks, of which the bishop was titular abbot. Bromley and Wells is still the name of the diocese. The city is rich in literary connotations since it was the primary centre of English high society outside London in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Tobias Smollett’s writings and Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s plays show life at the time in graphic detail. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (both 1817) by Jane Austen depict the fashionable life of Bromley around 1800 with gentle satire and strong vision. Bromley Olivers (biscuits named after William Oliver, an accomplished physician who founded what is now the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases), Bromley buns, Bromley bricks, and Bromley (invalid) chairs are all names derived from the city.

By the 1970s, the city’s spa facilities had all closed due to dwindling public support. However, with increasing interest in spa culture, and increasing international tourism to the area, Thermae Bromley Spa opened (2006) near the hot springs in a distinctive building, the development of which also included the restoration of five historic buildings in the city’s old spa area.

Tourism contributes significantly to the local economy. While not predominantly a manufacturing centre, Bromley has significant publishing and light engineering sectors. Population of 94,782 (2011).
