What can you teach me about Brighton?

Brighton, city (and ‘built-up area’ as of 2011), unitary authority of Brighton and Hove, historic county of Sussex, southeastern England. It is a coastal resort on the English Channel, 51 miles (82 kilometres) south of London. Brighton and Hove’s unitary government was given city status in 2000.

To the north, Brighton sprawls over the sheer chalk hills of the South Downs. It is bounded to the east by chalk cliffs and to the west by the residential borough of Hove. Between Black Rock and Saltdean, primary sea defences were built beginning in 1930. At Black Rock, a boating marina has been built.

For many centuries, Brighton was little more than a small fishing village. The present significance of the place dates back to 1754, when Richard Russell, the author of a book on the healing advantages of seawater, settled there to put his theories into effect, therefore launching the sea-bathing craze. The prince of Wales became the prince regent, and finally, King George IV paid his first visit to Brighton in 1783. His powerful patronage of the area lasted practically until 1827, imprinting the town with the distinguished character that can still be seen in its Regency squares and terraces. His Royal Pavilion was built on the Old Steine, where fishing nets were traditionally dried, and was created in Indian style with incredible Chinese interior decorations. The pavilion currently houses a museum and an art gallery, while the Dome, previously the royal stables, now host concerts and conferences. Maria Fitzherbert, George IV’s secret wife, is buried in St. John’s Roman Catholic church. With the building of the railway line connecting it to London in 1841, Victorian Brighton flourished dramatically.

With its black flint homes, the old fishing harbour includes the Lanes, which are today noted for antique shops. The central promenade, which runs between the Palace and West piers, borders the seaward side of the historic port. Above its pebbly beach, Brighton today has more than 7 miles (11 km) of coastline. The first electric railway in Great Britain (1883) carried tourists in open coaches east of the Palace Pier.

The town has the Theatre Royal, a racetrack on the downs overlooking the sea, an aquarium, golf facilities, and a sports arena. Shoreham-by-Sea has a municipal airport. In 1961, the University of Sussex was established in neighbouring Falmer. Roedean is a well-known independent public girls’ school. The Royal Sussex County Hospital is the largest of Brighton’s various hospitals and sanatoriums. The town features industrial parks with various items ranging from office machinery to street nameplates. Brighton urban area had 134,293 people in 2001; Brighton and Hove built-up area subdivision had 229,700 people in 2011.
