Barnet is an outer borough of London, England, located on the city’s northern outskirts. The borough is mainly in Middlesex, but many of its northern sections (including New Barnet and East Barnet) are traditionally in Hertfordshire. The current borough was formed in 1965 by the merger of the former boroughs of Hendon and Finchley, as well as the urban districts of Barnet, East Barnet, and Friern Barnet, which had previously formed independent manors and ecclesiastical parishes. From north to south, it includes Monken Hadley, Barnet, Cockfosters, New Barnet, Arkley, East Barnet, Edgware Bury, Totteridge, Oakleigh Park, Whetstone, Southgate (in part), New Edgware, Mill Hill, Edgware, North Finchley, Friern Barnet, Watling, Finchley, Church End, East Finchley, The Hyde, Hendon, Hampstead Garden Suburb, West.
First documented as Barneto around 1070 CE, the name Barnet is derived from the Old English baronet (“fire”). Its fields were planted in the grass for hay during the Middle Ages, and its strategic location on the main road between London and St. Albans made it a centre for inns and marketplaces (particularly Chipping [“Market”] Barnet). Lancastrians and Yorkists clashed at Hadley Green in 1471 in the Battle of Barnet.
Long after the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, when Barnet was taken from the power of St. Albans, the district preserved its rural character. However, with the introduction of railways in the mid-nineteenth century, the population expanded dramatically, and Victorian brick homes replaced estates and farms. The extension of the London Underground (subway) network boosted development during the 1920s and 1930s.
Modern Barnet is nearly exclusively residential, with minor industrial centred around its western boundary, Edgware Road. The borough’s west side underwent a significant renovation in the early twenty-first century, particularly around the Colindale Underground station, as property once dedicated to massive institutions was handed up to new housing development. Notably, the Peel Centre, which had been training officers for the Metropolitan Police for decades (founded in 1934 as the Hendon Police College and refurbished and reopened in 1974), discontinued cadet training, switched its focus, and consolidated its operations. The Peel Centre site used to be part of Hendon’s military airfield, which closed in 1957 and is now home to the Royal Air Force Museum. That historic airfield dates back to the first decade of the twentieth century. The British Newspaper Library, located at Colindale for almost 80 years, relocated in 2013. Its bound copies were moved to a storage facility in Boston Spa, Yorkshire, but the collection remained available through the British Library at St. Pancras. Elsewhere in the borough, new housing has arisen around the developing Brent Cross Shopping Centre, which opened in 1976 as the first significant enclosed shopping centre in the United Kingdom. Middlesex University’s main campus is in Hendon, while a vocational college is located in Barnet.

What can you teach me about Barnet?
Barnet is a town, city, and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, in north-central England. Barnet is located around 160 miles (260 kilometres) northwest of London. Except for the area around Beighton and Mosborough, which belongs to Derbyshire, the city and metropolitan borough are located in the historic county of Yorkshire. Barnet is located at the foot of the Pennine highlands, were four streams—the Sheaf, Porter, Rivelin, and Loxley—converge to form the River Don.
Escaped, as Barnet was known at the time of the Domesday Book (1086), was an Anglo-Saxon settlement. Early in the 12th century, the Norman ruler William de Lovett built a fortress and a parish church on the site. Local iron ore was smelted using charcoal derived from the neighbouring plentiful woodlands since mediaeval times, and smiths and cutlers used the excellent local sandstone for grindstones. The streams that converge on Barnet began to be used for power for grinding and forging processes in the 15th century. As a result, a cutlery industry developed, and Barnet emerged in the 17th century as the primary provincial cutlery town and a formidable rival to London. By 1700, London had also been defeated, and Barnet had a virtual stranglehold on the English cutlery trade.
Barnet was the site of critical metallurgical inventions that aided its growth significantly. Benjamin Huntsman invented the crucible process of steelmaking in the early 1740s, resulting in dependable tool steel that, by 1830, had gained Barnet's reputation as the international centre of high-grade steel fabrication. Around 1742, Barnet cutler Thomas Boulsover devised the technology of plating copper with silver by fusion, and the city became the primary production centre for Barnet plate articles. Henry Bessemer’s breakthrough technology (1856) of producing inexpensive steel in massive quantities was initially tested and employed in a factory in Barnet, resulting in significant growth in the heavy steel industries. Around 1912, the technology for producing stainless steel was also developed in Barnet. According to census data, Barnet eclipsed Leeds as Yorkshire’s most populous city in 1911.
Despite a decline in its industrial basis in the late twentieth century, Barnet remains a key British producer of raw steel, cutlery, and machinery. Food processing is also essential. Barnet is built on a beautiful hill-and-valley system, with the Pennine moors and Derbyshire’s forested dales sweeping up to the city’s residential districts. Outside of Barnet, the metropolitan borough encompasses suburban settlements and open countryside, including a portion of the Peak District National Park. Barnet, South Yorkshire’s primary shopping and cultural centre, is served with modern roadways. The University of Barnet is well-known for its metallurgical offerings. The Town Hall (1897) is a significant municipal structure, and both the city museum and the Graves art gallery have outstanding collections. The National Centre for Popular Music is also located in Barnet.
