What can you teach me about Nottingham?

Nottingham is the city and unitary authority and the geographical and historic county of Nottinghamshire in England. The town is located along the Trent River.

In the sixth century, the Anglo-Saxons occupied the original site on a sandstone hill commanding a Trent crossing. They named their settlement Snotingaham, “the ham, or village, of Snot’s people,” after the river that brought them there. After being peacefully occupied by the Danes in the 9th century, the community became one of Danelaw’s five towns. Following the Norman Conquest (1066), new overlords established a borough alongside the previous Saxon town, with both settlements being separately controlled until around 1300. In 1449, Henry VI confirmed all earlier privileges, set the position of sheriff and granted that the town (save for the castle and jail) shall act as its county.

A marketplace was constructed in the little valley between the Norman and Saxon settlements, as described in the charter of 1155. The historic market square, measuring 5.5 acres (2 hectares), is now a prominent component of the Nottingham townscape. The plaza, dominated on the eastern side by the Council House (completed in 1928), is surrounded by stores, although the middle space is reserved for pedestrians.

Nottingham Castle stands on Standard Hill, which was named after Charles I raised his standard (flag) at the commencement of the English Civil Wars in 1642. The current castle, which the corporation between 1875 and 1878 renovated, houses a museum and an art gallery. A statue on Castle Green commemorates Nottingham’s connection to the renowned bandit Robin Hood.

Nottingham University College was founded in 1881 and relocated to its current location west of the city in 1928. Lord Trent, alias Jesse Boot, founder of Boots Company, Ltd., donated the land, which was later used to fund much development. In 1948, it was renamed the University of Nottingham. Nottingham Trent University began as a polytechnic in 1970 and was elevated to university status in 1992. The city features two major theatres: the Theatre Royal (1865) and the Playhouse (opened in 1963). Among the literary figures associated with Nottingham are poet Lord Byron and novelist D.H. Lawrence.

The city’s diverse economic structure has led to long-term prosperity. Nottingham is a key transport hub in the heart of the East Midlands coalfield. It is also historically related to the sock and lace industries. However, pharmaceutical and tobacco companies shut down a bicycle manufacturing plant in the early 2000s. The economy’s service sector employs the majority of people—twenty-nine square miles of land (75 square km). The population was 266,988 in 2001 and 305,680 in 2011.
